Hi all!
What a week! You all ROCK! And I am totally serious about that! We started the Arthur Guinness “Campaign” well behind! Some projects had started earlier and already had 2000 votes when we started with Zero. But as soon as you got going, there was no stopping anymore. Positions: 300 -> 107 -> 74 -> 56 -> 34 -> 21 -> 16 -> 10 (!!) I haven’t checked the final position yet, but I expect that we will stay steady on 10 and that is such a HUGE achievement I am still speechless. Importantly, I had only ONE vote per day, so all the other votes (more than 2500) in total came from you!
[ad]
Sometimes when I wrote the weekly Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I wondered if it is worth the work, but I have no doubt anymore. Thanks for all your support and all the massively supportive comments. I will keep you posted about the next steps and developments and we should know the outcome by mid-September.
And on top of that we grew again massively this week. Nearly 27,000 Facebook Likes, more than 16,500 e-mail magazine subscribers and the website visitor numbers are steadily going up.
Only problem is still my lateness in sending this Dublin Event Guide on a Friday. I know! I am working on it! ;-)
This week I won’t ask for much more, you have already done more than I ever expected, but if you tell your friends about our amazing achievement, maybe they want to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
The bills continue and we can’t be sure yet if and how much funding we might get, so if you can help with the monthly bill of EUR 170 I appreciate it. You can do it here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
And without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) you can also help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Now, lots of free events are waiting for you!
Have a great weekend + week oh and THAAAAANKKKK YOUUUUUUUU!!! ;-)

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Have you ever though that you are not really that great and therefore not much (more) should be or can be expected from you? Maybe parents, siblings or teachers said that you re not great and you accepted their wrong judgement as truth. You created a limiting belief based on what others said and then stopped being brilliant. Because we all have a brilliance in one or another area! Many of us would think that Henry Ford, who was so important for the mass availability of cars, must have been a brilliant inventor, but here is what he said:
“I invented nothing new. I simply assembled the discoveries of other men behind whom were centuries of work. … Progress happens when all the factors that make for it are ready and then it is inevitable.”
You don’t have to be a smart inventor to create something amazing. Instead use what others have created, assemble it cleverly and you can achieve great things too.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Anna P. and Vera G, were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Where do I start! There are soo many events, that I wish the weekend lasted four days. ;-)
Here are my recommendations: The Liffey Swim and subsequent Liffey Live Festival is my starting point on Saturday and you have to combine that somehow with the Merrion Square Open Day and maybe a few minutes of the People’s Photography Exhibition. If you are female, then you might want to pop over to Fitzwilliam Square for the Sure5in5 Pamper Hours. But I see how it gets now really hectic. And I didn’t even mention the Vintage Clothes Kilo Sale or Granby Park, the Pop-up Park.
On Sunday then I would suggest to go to the Ukulele Hooley in Dun Laoghaire and maybe stop over in Dalkey as well if you like Lobster and Jazz.
You see what I mean when I say there is too much to do. Well, these are my suggestions, but you definitely shouldn’t try to do everything! Pick and choose and ENJOY!

It’s difficult out there for event organisers and Dublin City is no help
If you read the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) regularly, you most likely have read about “The Chocolate Factory” and more recently also “Mabos” was mentioned. They are two superb venues run by hardworking and very driven individuals. Excatly the people you need to create new things and to enhance the cultural life in Dublin. Maybe the people behind these venues were at some stage in the process a little more optimistic about the ease of getting things done (and paid for), but it also seems that some departments of Dublin City Council are really not helping much. An interesting article in the Irish Times last week describes the multitude of challenges the venues face and the real danger that they might have to close: www.irishtimes.com/culture/no-space-to-turn-trying-to-harness-dublin-s-disused-buildings-1.1489776

Retail News: HMV, H&M, Massimo Dutti, Tesco
+ HMV is back
HMV will re-open a number of their shops in Ireland, but NOT the former HMV store in Grafton Street. On Fri 06 Sept the new and much smaller “flagship” store in Henry Street will re-open. And the other stores in Liffey Valley, Dundrum and Limerick will open around the same time. HMV doesn’t exist anymore, instead the name was bought by Hilco Capital, BUT despite that gift vouchers were accepted in the UK by the new company. Hilco now has promised that they will confirm next week if the gift vouchers in Ireland will also become valid again. Don’t hold your breath yet, but it would be a positive development for all voucher holder (including myself!). Hilco also now owns the Xtra-vision brand and – to be honest – in the current media world it needs a miracle in my opinion for the two companies to be and remain successful if they still see their main business in selling and renting DVDs and CDs. businessetc.thejournal.ie/hmv-reopening-vouchers-1049740-Aug2013/
businessetc.thejournal.ie/hmv-reopening-vouchers-1049740-Aug2013/
+ Massimo Dutti instead of HMV
Massimo Dutti, the upmarket clothes brand that is owned by Inditex (owners of Zara) will take over HMV’s former store in Grafton Street and will pay 1 mio per year for the pleasure. This means they need to make EUR 2740 per day after salaries, purchasing cost for the sold clothes, insurances and taxes to break even! Madness! www.irishtimes.com/business/sectors/commercial-property/massimo-dutti-for-former-hmv-shop-1.1457973
+ H&M to open on College Green
Abercrombie & Fitch have their massive flagship store on College Green in a building that was used by Habitat for a while and H&M want to be close by. So they will open two doors up, in the huge former National Irish Bank building. www.irishtimes.com/business/sectors/commercial-property/massimo-dutti-for-former-hmv-shop-1.1457973
+ Tesco to open on College Green
More Dame Street news: There once was a Londis on the Southern side of Dame Street next to The Bank Bar and Restaurant and there is still a Londis on the Northern side. The former Londis shop on the Southern side has now been taken over by Tesco for a new mini-supermarket. It is quite close to the other mini-Tesco in Temple Bar, but clearly Tesco is competing with the Londis, Spars and Centras with these mini-shops.

Restaurant News: KC Peaches, Charlies, Pico Bros
+ Charlies Chinese Empire
I am sure you know the surprisingly large “Charlies” chain of Chinese Take-away restaurants, but you might not admit to ever entering the place. :-) Charlies One was next to the Olympia Theatre and is closed now, Charlies Two is in Temple Bar next to Meeting House Square,
Charlies Three is in Westmoreland Street, Charlies Four is in Sth Great George’s Street and Charlies Five is in Wexford Street opposite Whelan’s. Interestingly I saw a “For Let” of “For Sale” sign outside Charlies Two recently. Too high rent? Or not enough business? Or both?
+ Pitt Bros Smoked BBQ Project
Well, I have never heard a more complicated name for a restaurant, but I do admit that I thought of American, BBQ, Tasty and “Established, maybe a chain” when I read the name first. Not exactly all true: Two Irish guys are setting up the place as a standalone. It will be American style slow cooked meat and will open around the 2nd week of September. Could be good! The location is where Grüb was very briefly in St. Great George’s Street just a little up from The George.
+ KC Peaches
It was a mad project schedule. The builders worked through the night and even when the place opened last week, they were not finished. Actually, two or so nights before the restaurant looked like a far-from-finished building site. But the new KC Peaches is open and is in a good location at the junction of Dame Street and Temple Lane South, just opposite St. Great Georges Street. The food looks good and while the ground floor is very limited in space, there will be more room upstairs.

Playgrounds for Adults
Many of you sent in your opinions, but Emily needs another 50-80 to have enough of a statistically relevant sample:
Emily Gallagher, who also runs the free/donation-based “My Favourites” Walking Tours every Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday, did her dissertation about the benefits of play activity as part of exercise for adults. She concluded that adult playground would probably encourage higher rates of physical activity and higher rates of positive health and well-being. She got very good marks and a number of the governing bodies were very interested but told her they need stronger input before they could consider the idea further.
Emily is now looking for your help. She has cut her questionnaire into 5 sections and it would be great if you could answer all of them. The sections are here:
Section 1: www.surveymonkey.com/s/2GWT9ZT
Section 2: www.surveymonkey.com/s/CCTGHZJ
Section 3: www.surveymonkey.com/s/QYZ587N
Section 4: www.surveymonkey.com/s/SZXHYH7
Section 5: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RY9MQRH
Your help is important and maybe we will get a playground for adults at some stage in the not to distant future.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dalkey Lobster Festival
15:00 – 00:00, Fri 23 Aug
Dalkey (Various locations)
Thie Dalkey LobsterFest with Lobster, Crab and Jazz will take place this weekend. There will be lots of free events and some non-free events. Unfortunately the organisers didn’t make it too easy to find out which is which.
All events at the Vintage Village at the Sue Ryder House off Coliemore Road are definitely free. There will be 40 artisan stalls at the Vintage Village, Music, Competitions (Glam Gran on Saturday and Dogs on Sunday), the Vintage valuations (think antiques roadshow) on Sunday, an art exhibition, a kids play area, cooking and floral demonstrations and it will be the starting point for a 130 km Sue Ryder Randnonneé (a long cycle to Arklow and back). The complete schedule is here.
The writers corner has some Zumba dancing and Franco-irish music for you and a few more things. Check them out here. But we can only assume that at least some of the events are free.
Same goes for the Music programme here. I would expect that some is free, but definitely not all. An interesting line-up nevertheless with many events taking place in pubs on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. (Watch out for the very faint arrows on the programme if you follow the link above.) The Crab Jam on Sunday evening is a highlight. but again it is not clear if it will be free.
In the town there will also be market stalls and Celebrity Masterchef and Junior Masterchef events and there will be the most important Lobster Village with lots of Cooking Demonstrations as you can see here.

National Heritage Week
09:00, Sat 24 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The National Heritage Week takes place from 17-25 August and approx. 320 (!!) events take place in the greater Dublin area. Not all are free, but the majority of the events is free. You can imagine that that far exceeds the capacity of this Dublin Event Guide, so I will not be able to list them.
Instead I suggest that you go here www.heritageweek.ie/index.php/whats-on/event-search (The Detailed Search didn’t work for me, but the Broad Search did.)
Alternatively you can download the events list in PDF format here:

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Sat 24 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.
This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Four big sand sculptures have been carved into heavily compacted sand by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) and the exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug. So there are only a few more days and this is the last weekend to visit this impressive exhibition! I definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.

Granby Pop-up Park
10:00, Sat 24 Aug
Granby Park, Lower Dominick Street, Dublin 2
On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park opened on Thursday and will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.
“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.
Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.
I strongly recommend that you check it out and I will also tell you about the upcoming events in the next few weeks.

Dalkey Lobster Festival
11:00 – 00:00, Sat 24 Aug

People’s Photography Exhibition
11:00 – 17:00, Sat 24 Aug
St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
Last week the People’s Art Exhibition took place on the railings of St. Stephen’s Green. I like that Art Exhibition and I often found something nice there (but didn’t buy it because it was too big for my wallet).
This week the People’s Photography exhibition takes place also around St. Stephen’s Green and here I successfully bought things. Different art, but nevertheless very pretty and decorative. About 150 photographers will show their work on the rails and will sell their photos.
Have a stroll around the Green and admire the art and maybe you too will find a piece that you want to own. ;-)

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 24 Aug
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 24 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.
The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”
More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.
I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.
ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.
Have a look at the website below to see an outline on what is on show. I strongly recommend that you see the show and tell me afterwards what you thought about it: dublineventguide@gmail.com (During the week (Tues-Fri) the exhibition is open until 20:00 and from 12:00 and on Sat+Sun; 12:00-18:00).

National Heritage Week
09:00, Sun 25 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The National Heritage Week takes place from 17-25 August and approx. 320 (!!) events take place in the greater Dublin area. Not all are free, but the majority of the events is free. You can imagine that that far exceeds the capacity of this Dublin Event Guide, so I will not be able to list them.
Instead I suggest that you go here www.heritageweek.ie/index.php/whats-on/event-search (The Detailed Search didn’t work for me, but the Broad Search did.)
Alternatively you can download the events list in PDF format here:

So, spend a bit of time to plan your Heritage Week events, it is worth it.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Sun 25 Aug

10:00, Sun 25 Aug

11:00 – 00:00, Sun 25 Aug

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 25 Aug

Ukulele Hooley
12:00 – 18:30, Sun 25 Aug
People’s Park, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
This is Ireland’s National Ukulele Festival and it is a lot of fun! On Sunday the highlight and main event takes place, which is an 8-hour live concert in the People’s Park. The Big Ukulele Hooley Concert features well known in Dublin Ukulele groups like the Ukeristic Congress and other groups that are brilliant but are only known by the real Uke enthusiasts.
I was at the last two Ukulele Hooleys and really enjoyed it. It is an odd and hilarious instrument on one hand, but a well skilled Ukulele band sounds impressive. The full programme for the Sunday concert is here: www.ukulelehooley.com/Performers-Timetable/Performers-Timetable.html

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Mon 26 Aug
So there are only a few more days to visit this impressive exhibition! I definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.

Leinster House to open its doors for Culture Night
Fri 20 Sept
Leinster House
This is a VERY early advance notive, I know. A whole month until Culture Night takes place, but you wouldn’t believe how popular the Leinster House tours are. I got an early heads up and I will quickly pass it on to you so that you have a chance to book your place on the tour. I did the Leinster House (that’s the building where the Irish Parliament is in) last year and it is extremely interesting.
So, if you want to look behind the curtains of political power at a tour, don’t delay and book as soon as possible!
Tours are free, but ticketed and due to high demand there is a limit of four tickets per person. If you want to reserve tickets call 1890 252 808 or better (and cheaper) go to www.oireachtasevents.ie to book.

1913 Lockout – Rose-tinted glasses?
The 1913 Lockout is the big event of this month with official and semi-official festivities and it seems that especially the unions are joyous. But is it joy? “Commemoration” doesn’t automatically mean “celebration”. Well, there seems to be a certain degree of pride I would say. Pride maybe in the form “Thanks to us unions, the working and living conditions in today’s Ireland are soo much better.” But would that not have improved without unions as well as it did in many other countries?
I am certainly not an expert on the 1913 Lockout and because I didn’t really know much about it and was a bit puzzled about how keen some are on commemorating/celebrating it, I read up a bit on it. But I didn’t read any scientific analysis of the events or a sociological discussion of the events and their consequences. Instead I just read what it said on Wikipiedia.
Now we all know that the writer of any information can hugely influence the interpretation of it and because I don’t know what political opinion the writer of the information in Wikipedia has, I don’t know how neutral and objective the information is.
But let’s assume – for a moment – that it is reasonably objective. It makes you wonder if the unions maybe see the events through rose-tinted glasses:
It seems that Jim Larkin, the union leader, wasn’t overly respected in his union. He was sent by his union from Belfast to Dublin because he caused some trouble in Belfast. He then got suspended from his union in Dublin so that he had to form his own union. And in the end, te strike really failed to achieve what it set out to achieve.
And on the other side: William Martin Murphy, the employer, wasn’t as horrible as we are meant to believe. It seems he was regarded as a good employer, a kind man and his employees got a fair wage. He was successful but seemingly didn’t need unions to be fair to his employees. Politically he would have been completely on opposite ends to Socialist Revolutionary Larkin and Marxist James Connolly. So it is no surprise that he didn’t want to let Larkin walk all over him.
Another aspect: A third of Dublin’s population lived in slums, but let’s be brutally honest. At that time in the beginning of the last century, Ireland was more what we later called a “Third World Country” being a remote, and troublesome appendix to England. 1913 Germany was probably a lot more affluent, but I have seen pictures that shock us today.
So could it be that the unionists weren’t as heroic as we are meant to believe? And the employers were not as evil and exploitative. And maybe the poverty in teh country was not solvable with the Marxism and Socialism of Larkin and Connolly?
I have NO answers for these questions, so but based on what I read on Wikipedia, it seems odd what we are meant to believe. Rose-tinted glasses maybe?
BTW: Yes, I will check out the exhibition in the National Library and other resources, maybe then I will see the light. ;-) )
