Hi all!
Did you go to the Street Performance World Championship (SPWC) last weekend? If you did, I bet you had a great time. Unless someone is totally lifeless and/or hates any kind of laughter and fun, it is – in my opinion – virtually impossible to be bored at the SPWC. Sure, I am a little biased because I love the event, but I am certainly not alone. Merrion Square was packed again. The SPWC was – like every year – perfectly planned and organised and we should send our big thanks to the whole SPWC team and all performers.
[ad]
This weekend, the Bray Summerfest takes centre stage. On Sunday the yearly Air Show will take place and with the nice weather to continue for another while (We are sooo lucky this year!), this might just be the perfect event to go to.
And there are approx. 170 other events taking place over the weekend and the coming week, so have a look through this newsletter and select at least one or two events to go to. There are really good and interesting events taking place and even if something is not exactly what you normally would go to, I suggest that you try to go to ONE event per week that is outside your normal range of interests. It will widen your horizon and you will definitely learn something new, maybe even stretch your boundaries for good!
Remember that all events in the Dublin Event Guide For Free Events are free (unless otherwise clearly stated), and around 170 free cultural events per week in Dublin is definitely a good number.
This Event Guide is earlier than usual again because I am travelling this weekend and another thing I have to mention again: The spell-checker still doesn’t do its job, so you will find lots more spelling mistakes and typos than usually. Apologies!
The Dublin Event Guide is always completely free and is sent to nearly 15,000 people. I would be more than happy to send it to even more people and with a population of about 1 mio in Dublin, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find another 5,000 people that are interested in free events. To help them, I need your help. Please tell all the people you meet where you hear about all the free events and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events. Your friends (old and new), families and colleagues can subscribe (for free) at www.dublineventguide.com and LIKE the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Click on LIKE yourself if you haven’t yet done so and get everyone to Subscribe.
I Keep stressing that the Dublin Event Guide is free and that is indeed the case. To pay for the bills for sending it every week, I need about EUR 170 and if you like the Dublin Event Guide, it would be great if you could help me with 25 cent per week (or EUR 12 per year). There is no obligation on you to help and you will still get the weekly newsletter even if you decide not to help with a small donation. But if you like getting a nice summary of all these free events every week and if this is valuable to you, I’d say a small donation is no struggle. Thanks a lot! Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm either for a once-off donation of EUR 12 or more if you can, or choose the subscription option on that page to give EUR 12 per year without having to worry about it again. Thanks!!!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from teh Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
You know how we often look forward to something? Often something far away?
When I will be fit, I will…. OR When I am retired, I will….. OR After I got that next promotion, I will…. OR Next year, I will…. OR When I found the right person, I will….. As children we were waiting for Christmas for nearly a whole year! …but even as adults we still do the same.
We constantly wish our life away by hoping that once that “milestone” will be reached, all will be better/get sorted or then and only then the GOOD life will begin. Have you ever done that? Now consider this:
Maybe it’s not about the Happy Ending,
Maybe it’s about the story!
Don’t just wait for that end goal / milestone to be reached, enjoy the journey to it!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Hoai L, Elizabeth P, Hugh C, Lorraine F and Frieda K were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small donation and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Once again (and it doesn’t happen tooo often), I am away this weekend, that’s why you got the Dublin Event Guide this week so early. So, I will not be able to go to any events in Dublin this weekend, but I still had a look for you to see what I would suggest if you are undecided.
The Bray Air Show is definitely one of the biggest events this weekend, but it is quite busy with lots and lots of people and it is in Bray, which – for some – is just that bit too far to go. In that case, stay closer to home and go to the Rose Festival in Raheny. It is a nice relatively quaint festival and you can see wonderful roses, enjoy some music and just have a great day in a nice Dublin park.
And the third main event is the Riverdance events with a Family Fun Day in Merrion Square and the Riverdance World Record attempt at the Liffey. Looks interesting!

The Dublin Libraries and – separately – the different branches of the National Museum run different programmes / events in the summer for children. With the National Museums, these events are usually drop in classes and with the libraries in Dublin nearly always booking is required. If you have to entertain children over the summer check out www.museum.ie and the super slow library site www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/all_events.aspx There are too many events to include them here week after week.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Rose Festival
10:30 – 17:00, Sat 20 Jul
St. Anne’s Park, Raheny, Dublin 5
The yearly Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is taking place this Saturday and Sunday. The 270 acre park has a beautiful Rose Garden in it. Last year the festival took place AFTER the roses had blossomed. This year, it could just be right.
But there are not only roses at this popular festival:
There will be music from Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, from the Prairie Dawgs (15:00-17:00) and Young Ballet by Ballet Fusion. If you are interested in gardening, there will be Plant sellers, Nurseries, Garden Centres and Florists, Master composters, Bee keepers, recyclers and upcyclers. The Farmer’s market will provide you with food and lots of other stands outside and in tents invite you to stroll and shop and there are also art workshops.
Admission is free. I had to search for 20 minutes for some more details before I finally found a PDF brochure. Dublin City, your event marketing sucks! www.dublincity.ie/Press/Documents/RoseFlyer.pdf

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 20 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Liberties Festival 2013
09:00, Sun 21 Jul
Liberties area, Dublin 8
The 43rd Liberties Festival takes place from Wednesday 17 July to Sunday 21 July with a programme featuring music, film, photography, theatre, street art and community events across Dublin’s historic Liberties area.
There are a variety of events taking place every day and the website gives a daily overview. There is a nicely layouted complete programme available as well, but unfortunately the cumbersome issuu format is used, which makes that nice programme virtually unusable for many.
Some of the free programme highlights are:
Sun 21 July:
10:00: One Day in the Liberties – Photography Exhibition
11:00: Mipoint – Pop-up Exhibition by 24hr Community
11:30: Historic Walking Tour
12:00 Family Fun Day

Alchemist Café: Weirdness of the world
19:30, Tue 23 Jul
Mercantile, 28 Dame Street, Dublin 2
The next Alchemist Cafe will take place and is entitled “Why isn’t the world more weird?”.
Quantum physics predicts some pretty amazing things, such as that objects can be in two different places at the same time, and that we can teleport matter. The most amazing aspect of this area of physics, though, is that it has all been tested and is all true! However, we struggle to see quantum effects in anything but the tiniest particles.
Dr. James Millen from The Quantum Workshop will talk you through why it’s difficult to see quantum effects, how we may get around these problems, and just how far we can push quantum physics into our everyday lives.

Exchange Dublin, Upper Exchange Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Today we find ourselves at the end of a building boom and yet in a landlord’s market. With diminishing opportunities, jobs and wages, life is getting increasingly difficult if you rent in Dublin. Meanwhile, commercial rent rates strangle the vibrancy of the city centre and in turn drive up the cost of living for all. So why is the rent so high? Why are conditions so poor? And what can we do about it?
A panel of three speakers are going to attempt to answer these questions. Conor McCabe is the author of ‘Sins of the Father: Tracing the decisions that shaped the Irish economy’ and blogs for Irish Left Review and Dublin Opinion. Michael Taft is research officer at Unite trade union and James Heartfield has been writing about urban housing shortages in the UK for many years and has been an advocate for major new housing and development projects.

Dublin Event Guide – Odd Goodbyes!
I hope I didn’t worry you with that headline for the This is Odd!! slot this week. ;) I am not saying Goodbye, but I want to tell you about some Goodbyes that I get from people because some are really odd.
With nearly 15,000 Dublin Event Guide subscribers, there is a certain fluctuation of subscribers every week. Between 70 and 120 join our Dublin Event Guide Community every week and around 5-15 leave it. When people leave (there is always an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the e-mail because it doesn’t make sense to hold on to people that don’t want to get free information about free events) the person unsubscribing is invited to leave a comment / reason why he/she unsubscribes.
Many do so because they are moving away or were only living in Dublin for a while and then I get the “Moving to Australia” or “I don’t live in Dublin anymore” reasons. But others have other reasons. It impossible to please everybody at all times and some are unhappy with the Dublin Event Guide. I take the critique on board, but don’t always fully understand it.
“The mail is too long” comes up every now and then. Someone, who we shall call “Brian W”…because that is his name ;-) said that recently. I know it is long, but 170 free events is a lot of stuff, and I wonder if the person complaining does make the same comment about a newspaper along the lines “Your newspaper is much too long. Can you please stop telling me about all these events in the world? It would be more than enough to tell me what happened in my neighbourhood and down the street.”
Recently I was told by someone “Please get control of your long and nonsensical at times dialogue in these e mails.” Hmmm, sorry? Can you say that again? “Long and nonsensical at times dialogue”? And they are out of control? Oh my? I better catch them before they cause any damage!
But the oddest (and most confusing) reason was from Dave C a few months ago, who said “Stupid Advertisement Wordings (YOUR PERFECT)”. Since there was never any advertisement with the words “Your Perfect” (he probably means “You’re perfect” anyway, but that was never in any advertisement either) he maybe refers to a “Feel Good Slot”. Now if someone gets upset about a Feel Good slot message, then maybe there are other challenges in that persons life. I wish him all the best! Ohh and if he is not referring to the Feel Good Slot (which is not advertisement), then I am lost even more.
I hope that you all enjoy the Dublin Event Guide and stay with me and with our big and growing Community for a long long time. But if you ever have to leave, or feel the Dublin Event Guide is not your thing anymore, then let’s part ways and stay friends at the same time.
I know that I won’t be able to please everybody and I have stopped trying! I am very much interested in critique and opinions and will always consider every reasonable suggestion, but in the end, the Dublin Event Guide will be the best publication _I_ can deliver based on my values and believes and on my skills. If you are part of any type of community (family, club, workplace) you know that it is difficult to please 3-5 people. But pleasing 15,000? Different story!
There are others too: “My Dublin experience was great with your weekend tips. It’s really useful. But I am emigrating to another country so I won’t need it anymore, It will only make me miss Dublin :(“.

I will be away this weekend for a mini-trip to the UK, but I hope you will have a great time in Dublin and don’t wreck the place while I am away. ;-)

Have an event-full weekend and week,

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
