Hi all!
I really hurried this week and am a little sooner than other weeks, but not significantly. 24 hours is not enough anymore it seems. I need to stretch my days over and above the 24 hours somehow. ;-) The Street Performance World Championship is the main event this week, but you will be surprised to see LOADS more interesting events!
[ad]
By the way, this week you will probably discover LOTS of spelling mistakes in the Dublin Event Guide. Unfortunately my spell checker refused to work this week and when I type fast (especially in the middle of the night, when normal people are in bed) my error rate is quite high. I usually correct then with the spell checker, but not this week. Apologies!
Enjoy the wonderful weekend and while you are out and about, tell all the people you meet where you hear about all the free events and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events. I need your help to spread the word further. There are still sooo many people that have never heard of the Dublin Event Guide For Free Events. We are on our way to 15,000 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community, but we should be at nearly double that number! Lots more to do! ;-) Your friends (old and new), families and colleagues can subscribe (for free) at www.dublineventguide.com and LIKE the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Click on LIKE yourself if you haven’t yet done so and get everyone to Subscribe.
I don’t like this part, but I have to do it:
Every month I need to find EUR 170 somewhere to pay for the bill to send the newsletter in a reliable and non-spam-suspicious way. Your donations are the essential source of these EUR 170. So, please help if you can. If you can’t, that’s ok! In that case the Dublin Event Guide is my gift for you and if at any point in the future you can afford just 1 Euro per month, you might think of me then. Just EUR 1 per month does the job. That’s less than a bar of chocolate, less than half a cupcake and less than a third (!!) of a cup of coffee, Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm either for a donation once-off of EUR 12 or more if you can or choose the subscription option on that page to give EUR 12 per year without having to think about it. Thanks!!!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from teh Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
If you are using the Internet a lot or if you read newspapers you have definitely heard/read about ths week’s Feel Good clip and maybe you were one of the already 1.7 mio people that saw it. It is a total Feel Good clip with no deeper meaning behind it. It is just a brief example of enjoying life and having a good time. Make sure that you do something this weekend that you enjoy, even if it is something small. Even if it just puts a smile on your face for 3 minutes. It is definitely worth it!
The clip this week is the one with Wayne Karney, the now-named Dublin taxi driver that became Internet-famous after dancing for 2.5 minutes on Dublin Streets. If you haven’t seen it yet, just watch it at www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9fe1j1Jkf0 and smile. If you have seen it already, watch it again…and smile! ;-) I watched it a few times and it still makes me smile. Harmless fun for a couple of minutes.
And if you want “background information”, you can find it here.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Mary B, Rita B, Kostas R, Derek L, Johan S, Sheila H and Joseph O’L were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small donation and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week it is very simple for me to recommend events to you because I know that the Street Performance World Championship is outstanding and I will be there on Saturday AND on Sunday. But – oh shock – there are LOTS of other good events this week as well and I will miss out on them. I hate that. ;-)
If you have other time in addition to the time you spend in Merrion Square, maybe consider the Baseball Tournament or the new Science Gallery exhibition, which is brilliant. Or the Art Tunnel Market at Smithfield or the Toe Jam Car Boot Sale (Pity that I will miss that.) Or the Bray Summer Fest? Or the Sky Portraits Festival?
Or maybe you don’t want to do anything of this and want to go to a park or the sea instead? The weather is pefect for it, but I can’t condone that, obviously. ;-)
Whatever you do, enjoy it! Another perfect weather weekend!

Promote your product or non-free event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 14,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? Minimal, often even completely free! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Dublin Libraries & National Museum – Summer Programme for children
The Dublin Libraries and – separately – the different branches of the National Museum run different programmes / events in the summer for children. With the National Museums, these events are usually drop in classes and with the libraries in Dublin nearly always booking is required. If you have to entertain children over the summer check out www.museum.ie and the super slow library site www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/all_events.aspx There are too many events to include them here week after week.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

“Monidlo” PERFECT PORTRAIT Exhibition – Karol Jó?wiak
09-21 July (Weekdays: 12:00-19:00, Sa: 13:00-18:00, Su: closed)
Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2
“Monidlo”, “mamidlo”, “photo-portrait” – these are only some names coined for this specific type of portraits. The high-point of their popularity dates back to the 1960s, but their history extends as far back as the 2nd half of the 19th century to late 1980s. Embellished, colourized photographs modified with hand-drawn images, plastic arts techniques and darkroom tricks. Mixed techniques, in many cases developed or enhanced by the authors. A great number of these works were created anonymously. The portraits appear photographically realistic, but at the same time plastically unreal and idealized.
The Opening takes place from 18:00-21:00 on Tues 09 July. Admission to opening and exhibition is free.

International Baseball Tournament
11:00 – 20:00, Sat 13 Jul
Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, Dublin 22
I usually don’t include sports events because there are just tooo many taking place every week, but if there is something special or unusual then it makes a lot of sense to list it.
This weekend, an International Baseball Tournament is taking place in Dublin. It is the first “Peter O’Malley International Invitational Baseball Tournament” at Corkagh Park in Clondalkin 12-14 July. Since 1998, Corkagh Park has two baseball fields that are used exclusively for baseball: A regulation-sized adult field and an international standard Little League field.
Named after Peter O’Malley, president of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1970-1998, the four-team tournament features the host Irish National Baseball Team, Rota Blue Devils, representing the United States Navy, British Baseball League entrant Liverpool Trojans and Los Barbaros, a team comprised of international players who have traveled from all over the world to compete in the tournament.
There were three games on Friday and on Sat and Sun, the schedule is:
Saturday (13 July)
11:00 Ireland vs. Liverpool Trojans
14:00 Rota Blue Devils vs. Los Barbaros
17:00 Ireland vs. Los Barbaros
Sunday (14 July)
11:00 Third Place Game
14:00 Championship Final
Admission is free to all games. So enjoy the rare event of international baseball in Ireland.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 13 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 13 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
On Thursday evening I was at the launch of the newest Science Gallery exhibition and it is a cracker of an exhibition! You have plenty of time to go to see the exhibition, but don’t forget it! The exhibition will run from 12 July-29 Sept, but I won’t be able to remind you every week, so you better go early. :-) Admission is free.
The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”
More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.
I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.
ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.
Have a look at the website below to see an outline on what is on show. I strongly recommend that you see the show and tell me afterwards what you thought about it: dublineventguide@gmail.com (During the week (Tues-Fri) the exhibition is open until 20:00 and from 12:00 and on Sat+Sun; 12:00-18:00).

Street Performance World Championship
12:00 – 19:30, Sat 13 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
In my opinion the Street Performance World Championship is the absolute highlight of the events every year. Sponsored by Laya Healthcare, this 3 day festival brings year after year some of the best street performers from around the world to Merrion Square in Dublin.
16 acts will perform 45 shows on Saturday and 48 shows on Sunday. Shows will take place on 8 “stages”. They usually last for about 45 minutes and they are repeated a number of times. In previous years you might have been used to get a printed programme on site, this year this will NOT be handed out. Instead large posters will tell you what happens where and when . If you prefer to have your own timetable and map, you can find both here and print them or transfer them to your phone:
www.spwc.ie/sites/default/files/Dublin%20timetable3_0.pdf
www.spwc.ie/sites/default/files/Dublin_Map_2013.pdf
The printed programme that was handed out in the past also contained information about the acts, with that not being provided anymore, you now either have to take a chance and “try out” the acts in Merrion Square or check them out on the website at www.spwc.ie/finalists and prepare your own “To Do list”.
With the good weather, I expect that Merrion Square will be absolutely packed. So that all can enjoy the performances, please sit down on the ground if you are towards the front close to the stage area. If you don’t want to do that, just stay further back.
Admission is free, but the performers are all professional Street Performers and are not paid to do the performances in Merrion Square, so you will be asked to donate/tip them after each show. To make sure that you are prepared, bring enough money in the “size” that you want to give (small notes or coins). There are no money changing facilities on site and it would be a pity if you couldn’t give EUR 5 to a brilliant performer just because you only have a EUR 50 note. ;-) All donations are voluntary, but you will find that the quality of the performances is so outstanding that the performers definitely deserve some reward.
Regular Street Performance World Championship visitors will realise that the really big and well known acts are not on the list this year. No Space Cowboy, No Mario – the Queen of the Circus, No Pedro Tochas (my all-time favourite), but there are plenty of other amazing performers, so you will have a brilliant day or two.

Toe Jam Car Boot Sale
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 13 Jul
Moxie Studios, Pembroke Row, Lad Lane, Dublin 2
The Toe Jam Car Boot Sale was an epic car boot sale in the yard/former car park at the Bernard Shaw Pub until Dublin City caused some trouble and the Bernard Shaw had to leave it. Then then the car boot sale was gone for ages and now, this Saturday, it is returning. My first Toe Jam Car Boot Sales was the most surreal experience where it was like stepping into a time machine and being transported back into the 80s. It was great!
On Saturday the Car Boot Sale does not take place at the Bernard Shaw pub, but instead the new venue is Moxie Studios in Pembroke Row off Baggot Street. If you like Car Boot sales and if you like quirkiness, then go to this one!

www.spwc.ie/sites/default/files/Dublin%20timetable3_0.pdf
www.spwc.ie/sites/default/files/Dublin_Map_2013.pdf

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 14 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The photo exhibition “The long struggle for justice in Guatemala” will be launched by Junior Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello. It is an exhibition highlighting Trocaire’s work on Human Rights in Guatemala.
The topic is a trial for genocide and crimes against humanity against former the facto president Jose Efrain Rios Montt. Liberties Festival 2013
09:00, Wed 17 Jul
Liberties area, Dublin 8
The 43rd Liberties Festival takes place from Wednesday 17 July to Sunday 21 July with a programme featuring music, film, photography, theatre, street art and community events across Dublin’s historic Liberties area.
There are a variety of events taking place every day and the website gives a daily overview. There is a nicely layouted complete programme available as well, but unfortunately the cumbersome issuu format is used, which makes that nice programme virtually unusable for many.
Some of the free programme highlights are:

Multimedia & Electroacoustic Showcase
13:30 – 20:00, Wed 17 Jul
Contemporary Music Centre, 19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8
The Irish Composers’ Collective and the Contemporary Music Centre invite to a day of multimedia and electroacoustic art by member composers, called “SCREENS”.
From 13:30-17:30, the CMC’s Library will host a looping screening of a range of audiovisual works and immersive electroacoustic music. With a huge variety of works, from fixed media pieces, to a noise work looping on an ipod, the afternoon will demonstrate the full range of works by today’s young Irish composers.
At 18:00 a live performance of a selection of the day’s works shown in a more formal setting will take place, culminating in a live performance from composer Jenn Kirby with dancer/media artist Hiromi Okumura.
Called Feeding Time, the improvised work visualises the concept of time, space and evolution and asks ‘What is time feeding us, what are we feeding time?’ Taking in dance, projections and live electronics, input from dancer Hiromi’s movements will dictate both music and visuals.
Admission is free.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Charity Shop in Grafton Street? Just feels wrong!
When I read recently that Dublin City has decided not to ban Charity Shops from Grafton Street I was puzzled. I was puzzled for two reasons. First of all because it surprised me that it was considered to put a ban on a very harmless type of a shop, but it puzzled me even more that anyone would consider putting a Charity Shop on Grafton Street, Sure the number of people are there, but with the still crazily high rents in Grafton Street, I expectedt that NO Charity Shop would consider paying such a ridiculous amount of money to a landlord.
Imagine my amazement when I realised that there is already a Charity Shops in Grafton Street. (I only realised it this week…I have to get out more!! ;-) ) It is at 113 Grafton Street (near Molly Malone, next to SpecSaver and near American Apparel). I am not the typical Charity Shop customer and I would dare a guess that – for different reasons – the majority of Grafton Street customers are also not the typical Charity Shop customers, but the amazement came from the fact that a charity that needs our donations is prepared to put their shop in a street where many commercial brands stay away due to the unustainable rental cost.
The location at 113 Grafton Street was a former Irish Nationwide Building Society branch office and the Commercial Rates (Dublin City tax for businesses) is probably at least EUR 32,000 per year (This is the amount for the smaller or similar sized building at 110 Grafton Street). I wasn’t able to find the rental cost for the new Charity Shop, but the much smaller former Thomas Cook Travel Agency at 117 Grafton Street was EUR 405,000 per year in 2009 and American Apparel is paying approx. 800,000 per year. If we VERY generously assume that the rents have dropped by at least 50%, then the Charity Shop at 113 Grafton Street would have a rent of at least EUR 150,000. But since the shop opened already in October 2012, the rent is more likely above 200,000 per year. Nevertheless, let’s assume the lowest possible price for now and add the rates. This results in a cost of at least EUR 180,000 per year. So if the shop is open every single day in the year, they have to make a profit of EUR 500 per day, just to pay the rent! Insurance, heating and electricity and possible some staff cost even if most of the “staff” are probably volunteers will have to be added. (If we assume a higher rate, the daily profit for rent could easily amount to EUR 700
To me that seems like a huge waste of donations and it certainly doesn’t entice me to buy in this Charity Shop, OR to donate goods to them to sell in the shop.
I know what some will say: The revenue justifies the rental cost! Because the charities get all the goods they sell for free as donations and because most people working in the shop are free too, the overheads are low and the only significant cost is the rent. But due to the location the charity can make soo much more than elsewhere. This might all be true, but it STILL seems wrong that a charity pays a rent for a shop that is deemed to high by commercial high-street brands. It is as wrong as being HASSLED by a guy or girl on street who wants to talk you into setting up a standing order for a charity.
I didn’t mention which charity owns that shop and I did that on purpose: The charity is “Down Syndrome Ireland”, but I don’t want to take away from the good a charity does even if they – in my opinion – are misguided in some of their business decision.
Too hot!? Nation of Moaners?
An Irish friend said to me recently that Ireland is a “Nation of Moaners”. I am not sure if he is right and if you type the term into Google, then it seems the Brits have reserved that title already for themselves. ;-) But I can certainly confirm that weather has strange effects on Irish people (or maybe even wider: on people in Ireland). We like complaining about bad weather… and I think that is well justified. But it seems that many similarly like complaining about good weather and I don’t get that.
Normally we have to travel to reach the summer and many many do that. This year we are lucky and the summer is visiting us, but why is the same weather on our holidays away “Wonderful!” at home in Dublin “Much too hot!”. Now, if I say “same weather”, I don’t really mean that. Because “hot” in Dublin is 21 degrees, while on the same day “wonderful” in Valencia is 30 degrees, in Madrid it was today 37 degrees, in Rome 29 degrees, in Lanzarote 27 degrees, in Miami 31 degrees and even London is 2-5 degrees warmer.
How about just enjoying the warmth, cause it ain’t heat! And very very soon it will be over again anyway.
And this is TOTALLY over the top: Tricks to help you sleep well in the heat (on Journal.ie on 08 July): www.thejournal.ie/tricks-sleep-heat-979271-Jul2013/

Will the weather stay nice after the weekend? Who knows! So, make the absolute most out of the weekend. Get out, enjoy the sun, tank your Vitamin D, but use sun cream if you stay out long. I will be in Merrion Square this weekend and even in case you miss out on the best festival of the year, I hope you will have a great time whatever you do.

Have an event-full weekend and week,
