Hi all!
What happened!? We have wonderful weather for quite some while and the forecast is extremely good for the weekend too? It seems too good to be true! But the great thing is that it IS true and you should make the most of it! Get out this weekend, go to the parks. Enjoy the weather and just behave as if we lived in a Mediterranean country. ;-) I am looking forward to the weekend.
This weekend is full of events and at the same time quiet because there is no big single must-go event, but the following weekend will make up for it. If you want and have time, you can watch outstanding street performances for 8 hours on Friday, 8 hrs on Sat and 8 hrs on Sunday. I won’t be able to do Friday, but can’t wait to go to the Street Performance World Championship on Sat and Sun. No, not this weekend! The next weekend! This is just a big, juicy carrot dangling in front of your nose. First make the most out of the good weather this weekend, then work for another few days and THEN the best festival of the year will take place.
By the way, we are groing faster and faster and this is all thanks to you. Keep up the good work and tell all your friends and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, we are on our way to 15,000 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community and there is strength in numbers! Your friends, families and colleagues can subscribe (for free) at www.dublineventguide.com and LIKE the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Click on LIKE yourself if you haven’t yet done so and get everyone to Subscribe.
I don’t like this part, but I have to do it:
Every month I need to find EUR 170 somewhere to pay for the bill to send the newsletter in a reliable and non-spam-suspicious way. Your donations are the essential source of these EUR 170. So, please help if you can. If you can’t, that’s ok! In that case the Dublin Event Guide is my gift for you and if at any point in the future you can afford just 1 Euro per month, you might think of me then. Just EUR 1 per month does the job. That’s less than a bar of chocolate, less than half a cupcake and less than a third (!!) of a cup of coffee, Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm either for a donation once-off of EUR 12 or more if you can or choose the subscription option on that page to give EUR 12 per year without having to think about it. Thanks!!!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from teh Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
This week’s quote is partially borrowed from Keri Murphy at www.inspiredliving.tv and I have extended it a little bit with a quote that allegedly came from Albert Einstein:
Focus on Problems and you will have more problems. Focus on possibilities and you will find more opportunities. Problems can not be solved by the same way of thinking that created them.
So to find solutions for problems you need to shift your consciousness, you need to think differently and re-focus. This can be difficult at times because we are sometimes trapped in a certain way of thinking. How can you break out? How can you rediscover your resourcefulness? Reading a motiviational and inspirational book or listening to a talk or going to a seminar that challenges your way of thinking can do the job. If you feel stuck, drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) with a brief description of your problem and I will suggest some book or something similar to you.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Daire McC and Tom McI were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small donation and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Hmmm, this is a first: I am getting desensitised or is it just an odd week? There are more than 190 events in the Dublin Event Guide this week and I find it really difficult to fill this Joerg’s Picks section where I normally describe what events I will go to or would like to go to if I had the time. There are lots of good events, but nothing grabs me, makes me go WOW, so maybe it is desensitisation. ;-)
Well, what did I like. I like some of the 10 Days in Dublin events, I like the National Play Day (I am just a tiny bit too old for it, I guess!) and the Milk & Cookies Stories event is always worth mentioning and I STILL want to go to it, but never made it yet. Oh, let me add the Trampolin Market as well and then you have an ok selection for the next few days.
I am just biting my time before I can go to the Street Performance World Championship the following weekend. ;-) This is my most favourite event in the year and I really am looking forward to it! ;-)

Promote your product or non-free event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 14,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? Minimal, often even completely free! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

EU Presidency finally over! Hurray!
After 6 months and with absolutely no detectable benefit for us normal people in Dublin, the EU Presidency is over and the Irish politician hopefully can re-focus their work on domestic challenges. It didn’t really impact most of us that Ireland had the presidency, but if Tourism is sooooo crucial to Ireland as we are told all the time, then it was high time to re-open Dublin Castle and Farmleigh House on 02 July. Farmleigh House has started their summer evens programme now and Dublin Castle can welcome visitors again.
However, a few things will stay. Unfortunately the ugly and unnecessary concrete street barricade next to City Hall (now disguised as a flag holder) is one of them.

Many changes in Dublin
During the last two weeks a good few changes for Dublin were announced. I already forgot most fo them, but three I remember:
1) The O2 will be renamed. After Three will have completed the take over of O2 (expected in autumn), The concert venue “The O2” will have to be renamed as well. I still call it Point or Point Theatre, which was its original name and which possibly will survive all name-sponsoring companies. Maybe they will call the venue “The Three”? As awkward as “The O2”. But some other suggestions were made as well: Maybe it should be called The .3 (Point Three! Getit!?) Or a compromise would be appropriate? The O2.5 maybe (between 2 and Three?). :-P
2) The CHQ Building at the IFSC has been sold. It was meant to be a successful shopping mall, but it failed miserably. The renovation cost was EUR 45 mio and after years of under- or non-performance it was now sold for EUR 10 mio. Interestingly the new owner says that he doesn’t know yet what to use it for!
3) We will get postcodes by end of 2014. Ireland is one of the few or maybe even the only remaining country in Europe that has no postcode system at all. But that is coming to an end now. What the postcodes will be or how they will be constructed is not yet clear, but without a doubt the system will be as complicated as in the UK or worse. The Department of Communications is involved, so “complicated” is guaranteed.

“New” Restaurants in Wexford Street / Camden Street + Tiesan Closure
Last week I wrote about a number of closures and possible new cafe openings in and around South Great George’s Street. This week I want to continue along this extremely long street from Dame Street to Rathmines and look at the section Wexford Street and Camden Street because a few “new” restaurants are there. I put “new” in ” ” because, the three places I will mention are all there for some while already, but I never mentioned them before and they seem to be the new in-places.
The new restaurants in that section of the street are “Las Tapas de Lola”,”Sr Frango” and “Neon”.
“Las Tapas de Lola” seems to be a very popular tapas restaurant already, it is owned by Vanessa Murphy from Ireland and Anna Cabrera from Barcelona and I can’t wait to try it out. I love Tapas and “Las Tapas de Lola” make it very clear what you can expect there – apart from Lola, that is! Reviews seem to be very positive throughout and since its opening at the end of April the place seems to be buzzing. The Restaurant is opposite The Village and booking is absolutely required due to its popularity.
“Sr. Frango” is a restaurant that sounds and looks like a Spanish restaurant, which could be a winning formula. But surprisingly they call themselves a “Modern European Restaurant”. That appeals less to me than if it was Spanish, but maybe that is just me or maybe the vicinity to Las Tapas de Lola forced them to take a slightly less Spanish route? Sr. Frango opened in May and the website is in the makin, they are in the building where Stein Travel was, not far from the Camden Deluxe Hotel and the Palace nightclub.
“Neon” is quite old already. It opened in early 2012, but I have never been there and only saw it recently when I heard that it is always full. Neon offers “Asian Street Food” and is next to Green 19, another outstanding restaurant on Camden Street. Ohh, and Neon offers free ice-cream! Coolest incentive ever!
And finally some sad news, still in the same general area. If you move another bit South and closer to Rathmines, you come to the junction with Harcourt Road and Harrington Road and if you take a right there, you will soon arrive at the Garda Club. Directly opposite the Garda Club was a brilliant Cafe with super tasty food and a nice outside area. It was called “Tiesan” and suddenly without any warning, Tiesan closed last week. What a pity!

Go4IT Summer Camp
Go4IT is a small business set up this March and planning to run their first set of technology based summer camps this month. The summer camps are for 9-13 year olds, take place at Merrion Square from 15 July and offer kids the chance to learn stop motion animation, design elements and programming. Great idea! All these things are soo easy to learn for kids in a very playful way and the learning becomes so much harder when we grow older, so having some Summer Camp fun and learning useful stuff at the same time sounds like a great idea.Oh, and don’t worry, there will be outdoors activites too!
To find out more about Go4IT, go to www.Go4IT.ie and if you are talking to the founders Claire & Deirdre, tell them that you heard about their company in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
——-
If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

“Monidlo” PERFECT PORTRAIT Exhibition – Karol Jó?wiak
09-21 July (Weekdays: 12:00-19:00, Sa: 13:00-18:00, Su: closed)
Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2
“Monidlo”, “mamidlo”, “photo-portrait” – these are only some names coined for this specific type of portraits. The high-point of their popularity dates back to the 1960s, but their history extends as far back as the 2nd half of the 19th century to late 1980s. Embellished, colourized photographs modified with hand-drawn images, plastic arts techniques and darkroom tricks. Mixed techniques, in many cases developed or enhanced by the authors. A great number of these works were created anonymously. The portraits appear photographically realistic, but at the same time plastically unreal and idealized.
The Opening takes place from 18:00-21:00 on Tues 09 July. Admission to opening and exhibition is free.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 06 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Anti-Abortion Protest
14:00, Sat 06 Jul
Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin 1
An Anti-Abortion Protest is taking place at Parnell Square. The organisers don’t give any indication if that is a static protest or if it is a protest march.
(Disclaimer: I am not in favour of abortion, but I do think that under certain circumstances abortion should be absolutely legal and available in Ireland. With this in mind, I totally disagree with the Irish anti-abortion lobby. However both sides have a right to express their opinions and this is the reason why I include the events of both sides in the Dublin Event Guide – if I find out about the events.)

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 07 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Street Performance World Championship
12:30 – 19:00, Fri 12 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
In my opinion the Street Performance World Championship is the absolute highlight of the events every year. Sponsored by Laya Healthcare, this 3 day festival brings some of the best street performers to Merrion Square in Dublin. The main event days are Saturday and Sunday and I will tell you more about the event in next week’s Dublin Event Guide, but just in case you are not around on Saturday or Sunday, you already have a chance to see performances on Friday.
16 shows will take place (on 2 stages in Merrion Square) on Friday and 93 (!!) more shows will take place on Sat+Sun. The full time table is here www.spwc.ie/sites/default/files/Dublin_Timetable_2013.pdf
It is an event that you HAVE to go to. You will soo miss out if you don’t. ;-)
Admission is free, but performers are not paid and are therefore reliant on your donations after their performance.

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

“Irish History Lesson Urgently Needed” OR “Stupidity is my birthright”
Protest is not something that is happening too much in Ireland. But when people finally get involved then they usually get very enraged. And when you are enraged, you might forget all the facts… or maybe you never bothered with facts in the first place?
On Thursday an auction of re-possesed and other properties was meant to take place in the Shelbourne Hotel. It wasn’t the first of these auctions, which are carried out by the company “Allsop” and won’t be the last. But the auction on Thursday did not go ahead because protesters interfered with it. A lot could be said about the auction and about the rightfulness (or not) of the protest, but I will leave that for now and will just have a brief look at the very informed leaders of the protest.
Well, in all honesty, I don’t know if the person that was interviewed by RTE was one of the leaders, but he acted like he was one. And he was outraged and was spitting with fury when he said in this video: “97 years ago people lost their lives in that park over there. [St. Stephen’s Green] Constant Markovicz gave up HIS life to enable us to eradicate suppression, taxation, eviction, criminality.
The small little problem is just that there was never a man (“HIS life”) called Constant Markovicz. There was a Constance Markievicz though, who was a WOMAN, as can CLEARLY be seen by her bust in St. Stephen’s Green. And SHE did not give up HER life 97 years ago (i.e. 1916) as a consequence of the Irish fight for freedom, but she died in 1927 (11 years after the Easter Rising) possibly due to Tuberculosis. Ohh, and she was Minister for Labour from 1919-1922 and it certainly is not reported that she was ever against taxation.
So in summary, I think we can say that the guy interviewed by RTE, who is names as Tom Darcy, just got EVERYTHING wrong. Maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer, this Mr Darcy?
Is this Tom Darcy maybe the same guy that is mentioned here, a former Taxi Driver, then union official, then property developer who owes more than EUR 17 mio to the AIB?
I came across the story and the context here www.broadsheet.ie/2013/07/04/constance-craving/#comments

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
