Hi all!

Happy Friday 13th! :-) If you are superstitious, you might experience a number of challenges today, but luckily these challenges are limited to the superstitious people. :-O If you don’t believe that there is anything to be worried about on a Friday 13th, then you will have a day as lucky or unlucky as any other. Yep, this and other brilliant information about luck is all scientifically proven. You can read it in the hugely interesting book “The Luck Factor” by Richard Wiseman. (www.amazon.co.uk/Luck-Factor-Scientific-Study-Lucky/dp/0099443244). So, just look forward to a REALLY good day and it will happen. Oh and MY personal proof that the superstition is nonsense: I am born on a Friday 13th! …and for me that was very lucky. ;-) Ok, there could be a FEW people that use this fact as a proof for the opinion that the superstition is actually based on facts, but I will just ignore them. :-))))))

Only for special occasions I send a “Special Event Guide” to you. The upcoming special occasion that was the trigger for this Wednesday’s mail was the 1st Dublin Event Guide Party in 2009 on Saturday 14 Feb. We will meet at 21:00 in the Lotts Café Bar in Lower Liffey Street. We will meet at the back of the Café Bar in the raised area, a few steps up from the street level. If you end up in the in the older style pub at the corner (called The Lotts as well), you should leave and go to the Lotts Café Bar next door. Recognising me will be easy: At a recent visit to the Science Gallery I bought a “battery eating monster” (www.kikkerland.com/prod/1545.html) with two flashing LEDs as eyes. I will wear this mad “thing” on Saturday and you will DEFINITELY find me that way. ;-) I hope to see you ALL! :-)
…and just to make sure that nobody gets the wrong impression. This is an event for everybody – independent from relationship status. If you have no other plans for that evening, come at 21:00 and stay until midnight. If you do have other plans with or without a loved one, then just come for a little while before or after dinner/cinema/other pub etc. It would be great to meet as many Dublin Event Guide Community members as possible.

Quite a number of you asked me to provide a digested version of the week’s events from the long list of events in this newsletter. It is quite challenging to pick and choose, so to make it a little easier for me, I am describing in this section what _I_ intend to do or what I would do if I weren’t busy with other things. ;-) Maybe that helps you. All events mentioned here are described in further detail further down.

We completed our recording of a number of songs for Kevin Doyle’s upcoming album of Hollywood and Broadway songs, so this weekend I will have a bit more time to enjoy events. On Saturday I will try to go to Rathmines Library to see an exhibition about the bombing of the North Strand in 1941. Not a BIG event and I didn’t even mention it below, but you can find details here if you are interested (www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/exhib_north_strand_bombings.aspx). Later the Valentine’s Car Boot Sale, maybe a visit to the National Museum and DEFINITELY the Dublin Event Guide Party are on my plan.
Sunday doesn’t look too busy, but so I might take it easy and recover from writing this Event Guide before I go to the Gospel Mass in the evening. Maybe I will goto Monsktown to check Gravitation 2009, it sounds cool. ;-)

GOSPEL PROJECT ALBUM LAUNCH – TICKET COMPETITION
The Gospel Project (www.thegospelproject.net and www.myspace.com/thegospelproject), a 5-piece vocal harmony group, which was formed five years ago by Cathy McEvoy as an alternative to the larger Gospel choirs, are launching their album on Fri 13 Feb from 20:00 at Radio City (in Isaac Butt’s, Store Street, Dublin 1). In addition to the launch there will be a full-length concert and it promises to be a great night. Tickets are EUR 15 (includes a CD) and are available at the door. COSMIC VOICES – BULGARIAN A-CAPELLA CHOIR
Unfortunately this 20 strong all-female choir had to cancel the concert in Dublin and consequently there was no winner of the tickets. Apologies if you were hoping to win the tickets.

ST. VALENTINE IN DUBLIN
With Valentine’s Day looming, did you know that St. Valentine is actually in Dublin? Well, some pieces of him…or should I say “some pieces that are allegedly of him”? Billy W told me that Valentine’s relics are in the Carmelite Church on Aungier Street (between Camden Street and South Great Georges Street). I have to admit that I am quite sceptical about the authenticity of relics in general, but, hey, it doesn’t do any harm to think that St. Valentine’s remains are in this church independent from the degree of truth in it. (It seems, nobody every checked if ANYTHING is in the box! The seals of the box/casket in which the relics are in, have never been broken!) PUB + RESTAURANT NEWS
Whenever I am in the City Centre I discover “developments”. Some are just interesting: For example the planning application at Fitzers in Temple Bar (www.fitzers.ie/?section=12), which will result in a COMPLETE change of all aspects of this building. Others are surprising or nearly disturbing: For example the fact that the once very popular night club “Zanzibar” at the Liffey Quays was transformed from a unique Eastern style into a rather cheap looking “Bondi Beach Club”. And others again are shocking. Last week I was shocked to discover that Ba Mizu (www.bamizu.com) in Powerscourt Townhouse had closed. This was once a VERY crowded place and a few years ago it had a delicious food menue. But then the food went from very good to just ok, and last weekend I found out that the place closed already 6 months ago! Pity and shocking that it couldn’t be kept alive. – And regarding me not finding out for 6 months!? – I think I have to get out more.

THE EVENT GUIDE NEWSPAPER IS GONE
If you are in Dublin for more than 3 months you most likely came across the fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” in a pub or in the Temple Bar Information Centre or another venue. “the event guide” was a great little newspaper full of all events in Dublin. It was free and was financed through advertisement.
Totally unexpectedly “the event guide” has now decided to stop printing the newspaper and to become an online publication only. They always had a website (www.eventguide.ie), but the website was one of the worst looking websites imaginable and I expect (or hope) that a big overhaul is taking place at the moment. However, as an online magazine they will have to compete with the brilliant www.entertainment.ie, which will be a tough challenge and additionally I would expect that advertisement revenue will be even less. I understand a long long time ago “the event guide” was called “Dublin Event Guide”. I never saw it when it had that name and when I started writing this weekly e-mail newsletter, there was no publication in Dublin called “Dublin Event Guide” and certainly not “Dublin Event Guide for Free Events”. And because it described best what my newsletter was about, I used that name. Despite the fact that they never used the name “Dublin Event Guide” again, the people from “the event guide” were at some stage a little unhappy with me for using the name “Dublin Event Guide for Free Events”. But I explained that I had no intention of making their life difficult or of competing with them with my hobby project and I can safely say that the changes that “the event guide” is now encountering are in no way triggered by and have nothing to do with the great success the “Dublin Event Guide for Free Events” is. Never a cent of advertisement was taken from “the event guide” by me.

WEBSITE FOR WRITERS
It seems that we have a good few writers among us in the Dublin Event Guide Community and for all you talented people there is a new website, which Eimear Galvin mentioned to me. The website is www.writing4all.ie and it is for all your writing. And Eimear describes: “Writing4all.ie is a new web site that focuses on Irish literary talent. It is an Irish forum where authors can post work for free, receive feedback and review their peers. If you are interested in joining, simply register on the site and allow your creative juices flow. The site also provides a monthly newsletter, access to local writing and reading groups, literary festivals and writing courses. National and international literary news, updated regularly, is a popular feature and we have begun a series of exciting writing competitions.
Since its launch on 16 October 2008, Writing4all.ie, currently has 165 Authors who have contributed 114 Excerpts to the site and there have been 1883 Views of the Excerpts.” So, if you are a writer check it out, maybe it will help you.

A few weeks ago I suggested/invited everybody on the distribution list who has recently started a company – out of need or because they saw this great opportunity -, to send me some information about their venture and I promised to let everybody in the Dublin Event Guide Community know. I got a good few replies and am still open to receive more. Initially I had planned to list all of these business ideas here together, but to keep the size of the newsletter a little under control, I will now distribute them over a few weeks.

MARVELLOUS FACES – FACE PAINTING
Not too long back Maria Markey-Greene started a professional face painting company, has now a number of regular helpers working for her and has added balloon modelling to the service portfolio. The painted faces are brilliant and while certainly spooky faces around Halloween are a big thing, every festival and every birthday will benefit from having a face painter and a balloon modeller. The joy on children’s faces when they realise that they look spectacular is just amazing. I have to admit that this one took me a little by surprise. Not because it is too odd, but just because it is bordering the area we freely talk about in a conversation and even more so the area I typically would write about. But the concept sounds interesting to me and I definitely could see (or smell) some advantages:

JUST A DROP – THE ODOUR STOP FOR YOUR BATHROOM
David Clancy contacted me with the opportunity he is working on. His company is www.justadrop.eu and they are helping with keeping your bath room stink-free. The product is from the USA and seems to have got a good bit of airtime on the Howard Stern Show and David is now importing it to Europe. “Just a Drop” is a product that you squirt in the toilet before you do your business (David said “squirt in the loo before you poo”, but in order to keep all readers even with varying levels of English on board as well, I decided to alter his rhyming :-) ) and “Just a Drop” then stops the odour from escaping. If you are embarrassed about leaving a lasting, negative impression in the toilet at home or in work, then this will be the solution for you. And if you are now curious about the HOW, here comes the science: Just a tiny squirt (from a small bottle that fits in a handbag) creates a seal directly on the water’s surface, blocking odours from escaping, until they are flushed away. Just a Drop is made from plant extracts and David explains that is therefore way more economical, environmentally friendly, discreet and convenient than air freshener. DECLAN CLARKE – GOETHE INSTITUT
“Loneliness in West Germany” is the title of an exhibition by Declan Clarke which will be on show in the Goethe Institut (37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2) from 30 Jan-28 March. Admission is free. Specifically developed for the Goethe-Institut, this new body of work by artist Declan Clarke references the interrelationship between history, politics and culture, engrained in the ideology of the Institut itself. Clarke has created two new film works along with a number of interventions in the Goethe-Institut’s reading room, gallery space, library, car park and an upstairs apartment.

CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. GRAVITATION 2009
On Sat+Sun, 14-15 Feb from 11:00-16:00 Monkstown Pool & Fitness Centre will be home to boards, bikes, blades and beats for Gravitation 2009. Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown are providing another promising event and are describing it here: “Experience the power and skill of skateboarding and BMX displays. Marvel at the speed and agility of expert bladers and spin to hip hop beats. ART & PHILOSOPHY SESSIONS – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
(Knowing not to know) Art & Philosophy Sessions, developed by Sinead Hogan for Project Arts Centre, are aimed at a cross-section of interests and experience, and will build on and become shaped by the interests and direction taken by the participants. Different guests will be leading each of the four sessions throughout 2009. Reading groups will be established between each session which will look at excerpts from key foundational texts. These readings will create a shared body of knowledge and a platform for the sessions.
Participants are now welcome to register for Session 1: ‘IMAGE’, the first reading session for which will be held at the Project on Monday 16 February 2009 at 17:00. Session 1 poses the question ‘Do we image what we do not know?’, and will look at the work of Rancière.

DANTE AND THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS – PUBLIC LECTURES
A series of six public lectures, supported by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, will take place at University College Dublin from 02 Feb – 23 Mar. Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride are the seven deadly sins that were deeply rooted in Dante’s spiritual and cultural makeup and affected the conception and composition of his Commedia. Five scholars of Italian language and Literature and one historian will speak about violence and deviancy in the late thirteen century, Giambattista Vico’s philosophy and Leon Battista Alberti’s architecture…

BLAZE AWAY – LECTURES IN NATIONAL MUSEUM
A new lecture series, entitled “Blaze Away – A History of Duelling in Ireland” started on 03 Feb at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. This lecture series coincides with a newly opened exhibition at Collins Barracks, also called Blaze Away. The lectures will examine the history of creating and using pistols and swords in Ireland before mass manufacturing as well as the evolution of small arms technology in the twentieth century.
“The Evolution of Small Arms in the Irish Defence Forces” by Comdt. Gerry Shinners and Lieutenant Alan Kearney, Irish Defence Forces is the next lecture in this series. It will take place on 17 Feb at 18:30.
The Lectures will take place on Tuesday evenings between February and March at 18:30 in the AV Lecture Theatre at the National Museum of Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks. IRELAND IN THE HEART – ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI CULTURA
On Fri 20 Feb at 18:30 the Italian Cultural Institue will host the book launch of the result of a competition “Ireland in the heart/ L’Irlanda nel cuore”. ST. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL
The St. Patrick’s Day Festival website and was launched (with some hiccups) yesterday and the programme was announced for this year. The two surprises for me are a) the Fireworks Display is still not back in Dublin, it will be in Waterford and b) the HUGELY popular Ceili Mor has been cancelled completely. The Denny’s Big Day Out at Merrion Square will take place again and that was a great event last year. In addition there will be a performance on Grand Canal Square and this is the areason why I am already writing about the St. Patrick’s Festival. Co-presented  by St Patrick’s Festival and the Docklands Authority “The Spheres” is a unique spectacle performance which has broad family appeal. Creation, exultation, liberation, life, the universe and everything. The show takes a whimsical look at physics, the miracle of birth and humanity’s existential relationship to our planet. Performed by Strange Fruit a Melbourne-based performing arts company that produces and performs a remarkable style of work that fuses theatre, dance and circus, using a unique elevated medium. Perched atop 4 metre high flexible poles of original design, the troupe delivers a sublime performance, bending and swaying in the air, captivating and engaging the audience in absolute fascination.
The performance will take place on Fri 13 March at 18:30 and at 20:00 and on Sat 14 March at 18:30 and 20:00 on Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 1. The event is free but ticketed and you need to request your tickets here: www.dublindocklands.ie/spheres/index.jsp The duration of the show is 40 minutes. If you want to go, I suggest that you book soooon!

______This is odd!!______________

MOUNTAIN RESCUE OF TWO LUNATICS
This is not just odd, but it is crazy! Two wannabe mountaineers decided to climb Ireland’s 13th highest mountain, the amazingly HUGE 925m high Lugnaquilla. …and they got lost! In the end they needed to get rescued and more than 50 members of the Ranger Wing (Ireland’s elite army unit), two Air Corps helicopters, two Coastguard helicopters, an RAF helicopter and a Garda helicopter and a search team from Wales had to help. Madness! I am not suggesting they should have been left where they got stuck but for getting stuck on there little private adventure, I hope they will now be presented with the bill for this massive rescue operation! www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0210/breaking17.htm
