Hi all!
14,000 Dublin Event Guide subscribers!! After 13,000 Facebook Likes last week, this is another big milestone that we have reached all together and we are firmly on the way to 20,000. ;-) It is great to have you all in our ever growing Dublin Event Guide Community and I appreciate your support, e-mails and you telling all your friends, colleagues and family members about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). For the last 309 weeks, that’s nearly 6 years, this newsletter/e-zine has found its way to you to tell you all about the super free events that Dublin has to offer and many of you tell me regularly that they found a huge amount of free events only because the Dublin Event Guide highlighted them. I am glad I can help and it is great that you enjoy the weekly e-mail magazine (subscribe on the website), the website ( www.dublineventguide.com ) or the smart phone version/app ( m.dublineventguide.com ) or just want to be part of if by LIKING the Facebook Page
[ad]
When you think about it, we are really THREE in this relationship ;-): You – the appreciative audience; the event organisers that work hard to organise and run free events for you to enjoy; and me who does the matchmaking. ;-) Everybody has their part to play and only together we are strong. Many event organisers tell me that their events are largely visited by Dublin Event Guide readers, so maybe you should nudge the person next to you at an event and ask them if they also are part of the Dublin Event Guide Community. …and if not, tell them about it!
Lots of interesting events are listed in this week’s edition and with the sun making an appearance these days, the outdoor events this weekend (Docklands Festival, Family Play Day, etc.) should provide a lot of good entertainment.
The following weekend (Sat 25+ Sun 26 May) the great Dublin City Soul Festival will take place in Merrion Square and I hope to see every single one of you there. If it is a beautiful day, there is nothing nicer than sitting in Merrion Square and listening to food music. It is not this weekend, but the following weekend, but I want to make sure that you put it in your calendar and definitely come to the Dublin City Soul Festival.
When you tell friends and colleagues about all the free events, please tell them also about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) so that they can find about the events when you are not around helping them. :-) Your friends, family and colleagues can sign up on www.DublinEventGuide.com And when your out going to events, check the smart phone site at m.dublineventguide.com for event information “on the go”. Also join the 13,000 others on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
The donations took an unexpected drop to NOTHING last week! Not one single donation arrived with me. :-/ I hope that was just because you all wanted to shout SURPRISE!!!! when you help with this crucial support this week! ;-) All the help I get is used to cover the cost of EUR 170 per month. Apart from searching for events and writing about them, every month I have to find EUR 170. We just make it in most months, but it is always a struggle. You can help taking that worry off my shoulder: I suggest just EUR 1 per month, which amounts to EUR 12 per year. Come to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide because the company you buy from gives a small commission to the Dublin Event Guide. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Today I have even two Feel Good Slot pieces for you. The first one is a reminder that doesn’t need much explanation!
Guess what? Today is the best day ever!
Because it is the ONLY day ever.
Yes, I have heard of tomorrow and yesterday,
but they are just rumours.
The second one is a video clip of the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir singing “Hard Road to Travel” at a concert in the Helix: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGjG_LMPRq4 I mentioned elsewhere in this week’s edition of the Dublin Event Guide that the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will perform a concert in the O’Reilly Hall at the Belvedere College on Fri 24 May and if you want to get inspired, uplifted and motivated, then you have to come to it. Tickets can be bought here. They are not free, but I am involved with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, that’s why you read about a non-free event here. ;-)
The words of the songs go like this:
I’ve got a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
I’ve got a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
But I can’t turn back, my heart is fixed
My mind’s made up, I’ll never stop
My faith will see me through

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week not a single person helped with a crucial donation. All the support is much needed, though!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
The Dockland’s Summer Fest and the Family Day (on Sunday) are the events I am looking forward to this weekend. If you are a Rugby Fan, check out the European Champions Village in Merrion Square. Great idea to have a big outdoors screen. On Saturday evening the Discovery Gospel Choir is inviting to an interesting event. Have a look!
Other events to check out: Muro, the street art expo; “Spill” the playground dance event!
On Monday check out the Digital Technology showcase at the Round Room if you get a chance. You will find me there at some stage.
Next Friday the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Concert takes place (see the competition section for details) and the Dublin City soul Festival starts witha non-free event in the Sugar Club. Find all details about the Soul Festival here www.dublincitysoulfestival.ie

Gardiner Street Gospel Choir – Lift your Voice – Ticket Competition
Fri 24 May – 20:00
O’Reilly Theatre, Belvedere College, 6 Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1
The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir is one of the best Gospel Choirs in Ireland and it is in existence for more than 13 years now. I am for the last 8 years with the choir and usually look after the technical side. After a lot of work, the choir recorded a great CD, which you can buy online and very soon also in shops.
We sing every week from Sept to June at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, but to launch this super CD we will have a concert with all the frills ;-) in the O’Reilly Theatre in Belvedere College. Tickets are EUR 15 and all proceeds will go to the Temple Street Children’s Hospital and to Headway, a support service for people with brain injuries.
It would be great to have all of you come to the concert ;-) and for two of you I managed to get a pair of tickets each. This concert will be epic and you won’t want to miss it! So, you should buy your ticket here to make sure that you still get one. If you live life a little more on the risky side, you could hope for winning a pair of tickets, but imagine you don’t win and all tickets are sold out then? You know what I am trying to say! ;-)
Anyway, so if you want to win a pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with LIFT YOUR VOICE in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by Wed 22 May at 12:00. Check our website where you find links to the ticket site and to the places where you can buy our new CD online: www.gardinerstreetgospelchoir.com
If you want to buy the CD directly, you can do so on iTunes or on Google Play right here.

BLOOM IN THE PARK – TICKET COMPETITION
30 May-03 June
Phoenix Park
Bord Bia’s Bloom Festival is taking place again in Phoenix Park and this year it will run from Thurs 30 May – Mon 03 June. Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and in previous years 90,000 people visited the event. Tickets for the Festival cost from EUR 20 for adults and kids go free, there are various concession and early bird prices if you book on line and they can be bought on www.ticketmaster.ie/bloomdiscount
For the Dublin Event Guide Readers, Bord Bia is making 5 pairs of tickets available for a competition. And even if you are not one of the ticket winners, you will get something from Bord Bia. I have a discount code for you to get a reduced admission charge: Book online before the event and use the promotional code DEG13 to get an extra EUR 2 discount off the advance ticket price. (This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.)
If you want to have a chance to win one of the 5 sets of Bloom tickets brought to you by Bord Bia send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BLOOM13 in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Mon 20 May. If you already have entered, and I got already hundreds of competition entries, please do not send me another mail. More entries will not increase your chances!
Bloom is a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a truly unique show, showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host live cooking demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Donal Skehan and Rozanne Stevens. The demonstrations will be hosted by TV presenter and foodie, Ella McSweeney who will also interview Irish food producers throughout the weekend.
With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really is the place to be this June bank holiday weekend. So, be at Bloom between 30 May and 03 June. The website www.bloominthepark.com is your place to buy the tickets and to find more information. Another great help for people without car: A courtesy shuttle bus from Heuston station will bring you to the Bloom site.

Dublinbikes extension – with some surprises
The succesful Dublinbikes Scheme is to be expanded significantly from October and by July 2014 there will be a total of 1500 bikes (950 more than now) at 102 bike stations (58 more than now). That is a BIG step forward for this brilliant service. The new stations will stretch to Kilmainham in the West and to the Point Depot / O2 in the East. So, really really good news.
However, there are a number of surprises as well and some are bad surprises: 1) The bike scheme does even after the extension not go North or South of the canals. Understandable – for now – but still a bit disappointing. 2) The yearly rental will DOUBLE. It will be increased from EUR 10 to EUR 20. Yes, EUR 20 is still a good price for that service, but a 100% increase? I would have expected that signing up new users combined with maybe a 50% increase would have been a better approach. 3) There will still be odd pockets in the City that are not very well served. Imagine you are in Grafton Street, where is the nearest bike stand? Why is there no stand at the top of Grafton Street near Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre or at the bottom near Molly Malone?
But there is one big whopping and amazing surprise that left me speechless. Looking after 1500 bikes at 102 stations requires some vans and a number of people on the street and in some sort of bike “garage”. And then you need some admin people doing the billing and solving the problems that might occur if you have 40,000 or so subscribers. But you don’t have to find customers, sell to them or produce anything. It all boils down to maintenance and administration. Now I am asking you, how much do you think that should cost? Do you have a figure in mind? What if I told you that Dublin City will pay 1.925 million per year for it? Are you speechless too? Unfortuantely, it is a 10 year contract, otherwise I definitely would offer my services for a LOT less! :-) www.irishtimes.com/news/councillors-approve-35m-plan-for-dublin-bikes-expansion-1.1392187

Netflix kills the DVD Shops
There once was a song called “Video killed the Radio Star“. The song is from 1979 and now in 2013 someone could write a song “Netflix killed the DVD Shops” or something similar. During the week Laser DVD Rental in Rathmines announced that they will close and they currently have a DVD sale of EUR 5 per DVD. It seems that the other Laser DVD shop, in George’s Street, will not be affected.
Xtravision just managed to turn a corner. On 29 April receivers were appointed as the company had run out of credit when a credit insurance was cancelled. Xtravision was in receivership in 2011 and got sorted back then and is now making EUR 1.5m per year with most shops being profitable. Doesn’t sound too bad, right? Well the good news was that the company didn’t close down and the 1023 employees didn’t lose their jobs. Some (9 in the Republic of Ireland) of the 152 stores will be closed, however, which means that some employees will be without a job, but the majority was saved.
But what is the future? The DVD rental market is collapsing and with faster Internet, Google Play will follow Netflix and others will offer similar services. So I wouldn’t buy shares in Xtravision if they were available. And if I had any, I would use up all my vouchers as soon as possible too.

Clean Clothes Campaign – Support from most clothes brands
The Clean Clothes Campaign, who lobbied all major clothes brands and clothes retailers after the collapse of a factory building in Bangladesh, which killed more than 100 people and injured more than 1000, achieved a big success when Primark/Penneys signed the “Accord on Fire & Building Safety in Bangladesh”. A majority of clothes suppliers/brands/retailers who have shops in Ireland have signed the accord now and the full list is here.

Africa Centre in need of office & meeting space
Did you know that Ireland is home to 58,000 Africans? It is great that Ireland is so multi-cultural and we get to experience bits of all the cultures here.
The Africa Centre (currently or formerly at 18 Stephen’s Lane, Dublin 2) is an organisation which works for the integration of Africans in Ireland and the promotion of African culture and Tiziana S., an enthusiastic Dublin Event Guide reader, now told me that the Africa Centre is at risk of closing down. They are without office or meeting space at the moment and if you can help, get in contact with them. More information and contact details can be found here.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Die Welt von Morgen / Tomorrow’s World – Gillian Fitzpatrick
08 May – 21 June
Goethe-Institut Irland, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The Goethe-Institut presents a solo exhibition of Irish artist Gillian Fitzpatrick, with an accompanying performance at the preview on Wed 08 May (18:00-19:30) in the Goethe-Institut.
The title of the exhibition Die Welt von Morgen, (‘Tomorrow’s World’) is taken from the BBC Television show (1965 – 2003) featuring the latest discoveries and innovations in science and technology. At the height of its popularity in the 1970’s it was drawing audiences of around 10 million each week. In 1975 ‘Tomorrow’s World’ ran a feature on the German band Kraftwerk. The exhibition Die Welt von Morgen presents a distorted imaginary archive of technological nostalgia inspired by Kraftwerk. The gallery space at the Goethe-Institut seems to be taken over by an obsessive fan of the band trying to create a version of Kraftwerk’s Kling Klang studios in Düsseldorf. There is also an element of trying to re-create things from memories that have been half forgotten: a neon-sign, a drum machine, a record sleeve and vinyl LPs.
Admission is free. Opening hours in May: Tue-Thu 10:00-20:00, Fri & Sat 10:00-13:30

Dublin Tribal Spirit – Drumming Circle
20:00 – 22:00, Fri 17 May
Lantern Centre, 17 Synge Street, Dublin 8
“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.
There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

National Dawn Chorus
04:00, Sun 19 May
Dublin (various locations)
Birdwatch Ireland’s National Dawn Chorus Day is traditionally the day when wildlife enthusiasts the length and breadth of Ireland set their alarm clocks much earlier than usual and go out to enjoy a morning of beautiful birdsong.
Now you have to get up with the birds for that OR not go to bed the night before. That latter solution might be the better option for people like me who like to sleep long in the morning. :-)
There are a number of events taking place in Dublin:
Dublin Fingal:
(1) Skerries Mills. Meet at the main car park at 5:15am.
(2) Newbridge Demesne. Meet at the main car park at 5:15am
Dublin South:
Meet at the car park beside Cabinteely House at 4.00am
Dublin Tolka:
Meet at the front gate of the Botanic Gardens at 4:30am. Please note: gate will close at 4:30am, so no admission thereafter.
The times for Dublin Tolka seem to be a little wrong (or do you really only have 59 seconds to get into the park?) I suggest you be at the gate a bit before 04:30.

It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel). www.facebook.com/merchantsindoormarket

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. The Irish Wildlife Trust is running a Geology Walk this weekend:

A leisurely walk, led by Muireann McDonnell and Kieran Craven of TCD Department of Geology, we will look at the different rocks forming the surrounding landscape, examine the pebbles underfoot and the glacial deposits of the cliffs above, and see the dramatic contact between two contrasting rock types at Whiterock.
We’re meeting at Killiney Dart station and if you’d like to join us, just send a message to dublinbranch@iwt.ie with the number of places you’d like to reserve. The event is free of charge but you are welcome to make a donation on the day. “

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Anonymous Event Announcements
Yes, today’s This is Odd! is a little closer to home than many other topics I mention here. But I just received another one of these Anonymous Event Announcements and it has pushed me over the edge. ;-) I can imagine that you wonder what I mean with “Anonymous” because if it is sent from an e-amil address it is not really anonymous. …and you are right. What I am talking about is an e-mail from a company e-mail address or a non-name related Gmail or Hotmail address that is not signed with a name.
So let me give you an (invented) example. I receive an e-mail from info@cooleventcompany.ie that tells me about their next super cool free event and asks me to put the information in the Dublin Event Guide. The e-mail is signed with “Regards” or maybe with “Thanks”. No name, no phone number no nothing.
Now you could say that if all information is in the mail it is not necessary to sign with a name or to give a phone number or anything else. And again you are right. But think about who you deal with, A human being asking another human being for help/favour or anything like that is typically a LOT more successful than an “anonymous” e-mail arriving in some Inbox. If John or Mary asks you to help them, would you feel a little more enclined to help than if “Thanks” asks you?
EVERY mail is written by a human being, so why do people hide behind a neutral e-mail address. Does that indicate that you are not really backing the mail that you just sent? Lack of integrity and congruency? Maybe? Either way, I find it ODD!!

Spring is here!!!! Don’t you tell me about “summer” at temperatures of firmly below 15 degrees!! ;-) But you know what!? I don’t mind that much what the temperature is, as long as the sun shows her face a good bit! Do you feel the same?

Have an event-full weekend and week,

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
