Hi all!
13,000 LIKES on Facebook now!! That is some number of people! Soon there will be the point reached where more people LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook than there are people that subscribe to it. This makes sense because there are about 20,000 unique visitors per month using the website and there are 2,000 users of the smart phone version. That’s a hell of a lot of Dublin Event Guide readers! Each and everyone of you is much appreciated and I think of all of you every Thursday & Friday when I write about pages and pages of events. I am glad that we all found got in the Dublin Event Guide community and the high quality competitions show you that event organisers think so too.
[ad]
This week I have a Ticket Competition for the great Bloom gardening event on the June bank holiday weekend for you, so send me your entries!
With the Harold’s Cross Community Festival, the Open Studios Day “Visit 2013”, the Gospel Rising Music Festival in Bray, The People’s Art Exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green, the Family Sport Day in O’Connell Street, the Inland Waterways Boat Rally, the Flag Parade in Dun Laoghaire, there is lots to do. Enjoy Dublin and all the free events.
When you tell friends and colleagues about all the free events, please tell them also about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) so that they can find about the events when you are not around helping them. :-) Your friends, family and colleagues can sign up on www.DublinEventGuide.com and when your out going to events, check what else is happening on the smart phone site at m.dublineventguide.com and while we are talking about all the resources, join the 13,000 others on Facebook and help us to make it to 15,000 sooner than later: We are at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide on Facebook! Oh, and did I tell you that there might be a YouTube channel at some time soon as well? Watch that space! :-)
Thanks a LOT to the people that help with the crucial donations for the Dublin Event Guide. All the help I get is used to cover the cost of EUR 170 per month and if I ever get to a point that there are a few cents left over, I will re-invest it into the improvement programme for the Dublin Event Guide. Every month I have to find EUR 170 have to find and in most months we just make it to that amount. So if you can help with a donation (I suggest just EUR 1 per month, which amounts to EUR 12 per year) go here and make me smile when I see your help arriving in. :-)
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide because the company you buy from gives a small commission to the Dublin Event Guide. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Some people like affirmations, they like reminding themselves of the things they want to be, become or stand for and if this works for you then keep using it. Others set goals in a different level and again others don’t set goals and don’t use affirmations. If you belong to the last group, you should try one of the other two methods. Imagine if they work! ;-) And if you want to try out affirmations, I have a quite good one for you today:
I choose to be unstoppable.
I am bigger than my concerns and worries.
The strength of others inspires me daily.
I focus on my goal.
I trust my intuition and live a curageous life.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Agnes C, Flora F, Karl F, Raymond M, Rafika K, Natalija B, Nicola WN and A C were the wonderful people who stepped in and helped with a crucial donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This is a different weekend for me than normally. Because I am taking part in the Gospel Rising Festival in Bray, I do not have a chance at all to go to any events in Dublin. The good news is that you can enjoy many parts of Gospel Rising as well if you like Gospel Music, but there are also LOTS of great event sin Dublin if you have another preference.
What would I do this weekend? I would definitely go to the People’s Art Exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green on Saturday, then on to some Studios at their Open Door Days for “Visit 2013” and on Saturday evening I recommend you go to the Gospel Rising Main Festival Concert in Bray from 19:00-22:30.
On Sunday I would listen to the Larkfield Four and the Ukersitic Congress at the Harold’s Cross Festival on Sunday, if possible I would squeez the “Freshly Squeezed” Short Film Festival in, and I would also try to fit in the Sunday Fusion World Market.
During the week? After that busy weekend, I need some break! :-) So I will let you decide for yourself what you will do after Sunday.

BLOOM IN THE PARK – TICKET COMPETITION
31 May-04 June
Phoenix Park
Bord Bia’s Bloom Festival is taking place again in Phoenix Park and this year it will run from Thurs 31 May – 04 June. Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and in previous years 90,000 people visited the event. Tickets for the Festival cost from EUR 20 for adults and kids go free, there are various concession and early bird prices if you book on line and they can be bought on www.ticketmaster.ie/bloomdiscount
For the Dublin Event Guide Readers, Bord Bia is making 5 pairs of tickets available for a competition. And even if you are not one of the ticket winners, you will get something from Bord Bia. I have a discount code for you to get a reduced admission charge: Book online before the event and use the promotional code DEG13 to get an extra EUR 2 discount off the advance ticket price. (This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.)
If you want to have a chance to win one of the 5 sets of Bloom tickets brought to you by Bord Bia send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BLOOM13 in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Mon 20 May.
Bloom is a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a truly unique show, showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host live cooking demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Donal Skehan and Rozanne Stevens. The demonstrations will be hosted by TV presenter and foodie, Ella McSweeney who will also interview Irish food producers throughout the weekend.
With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really is the place to be this June bank holiday weekend. So, be at Bloom between 30 May and 03 June. The website www.bloominthepark.com is your place to buy the tickets and to find more information. Another great help for people without car: A courtesy shuttle bus from Heuston station will bring you to the Bloom site.

No Trim Ballon Fiesta in 2013!
With Trim being the nearest place to Dublin for a Hot Air Balloon event, I know that a fair number of people made the trip to Trim in previous years for the Balloon Fiesta. The organisers were not blessed with good weather in the past, so all the nice plans for mass launches never really worked out. For 2013 they have decided to give it a rest and to come back again next year. Let’s hope that in 2014 the weather (around Easter) is perfect for them. On the Trim Hot Air Balloon Fiesta Facebook Page they will tell you about other Hot Air Balloon events in case you are interested. www.facebook.com/TrimFiesta

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Garden – Niamh O’Malley
26 April – 22 June (11:00-20:00)
Project Arts Centre, 39 Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Garden is an exhibition by Dublin-based artist Niamh O’Malley. Known for her painting and sculptural interventions and more recently for her explorations of monumental sites, O’Malley is showing a personal landscape using video and sculpture – the garden which she and her family shape and create with the changing seasons. Featuring a new video installation and a large painting on glass, this landscape will be revealed through screens, mirrors and windows.
The video work will show a mirror panning and tilting, reversing the normal flow of light and camera movement, slowly and silently illuminating the garden in an elusive dance. Accompanying the video work and set into a wooden seating platform, a large glass plane will have textures and marks painted on both sides, creating a painting which is visible from both the front and back – a limitless image which complicates ideas of reverse, background, and negative space.

Die Welt von Morgen / Tomorrow’s World – Gillian Fitzpatrick
08 May – 21 June
Goethe-Institut Irland, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The Goethe-Institut presents a solo exhibition of Irish artist Gillian Fitzpatrick, with an accompanying performance at the preview on Wed 08 May (18:00-19:30) in the Goethe-Institut.
The title of the exhibition Die Welt von Morgen, (‘Tomorrow’s World’) is taken from the BBC Television show (1965 – 2003) featuring the latest discoveries and innovations in science and technology. At the height of its popularity in the 1970’s it was drawing audiences of around 10 million each week. In 1975 ‘Tomorrow’s World’ ran a feature on the German band Kraftwerk. The exhibition Die Welt von Morgen presents a distorted imaginary archive of technological nostalgia inspired by Kraftwerk. The gallery space at the Goethe-Institut seems to be taken over by an obsessive fan of the band trying to create a version of Kraftwerk’s Kling Klang studios in Düsseldorf. There is also an element of trying to re-create things from memories that have been half forgotten: a neon-sign, a drum machine, a record sleeve and vinyl LPs.
Admission is free. Opening hours in May: Tue-Thu 10:00-20:00, Fri & Sat 10:00-13:30

Bratacha 2013 – Festival of Flags and Emblems
09:30 – 16:30, Sat 11 May
Dun Laoghaire (various locations)
Flag enthusiasts will hopefully know all about this event, because some part is already over when you get this Dublin Event Guide. Since Thursday there were flag related talks and events in Dun Laoghaire. One of these odd but wonderful (for some!) events that are connected to “The Gathering” and possibly wouldn’t exist without it.
On Saturday there are a few more talks from 09:30 in the Assembly Hall and the County Hall and then from 15:00 a Flag Parade with Marching Bands, Community Groups and Vintage Cars will take place. Start and Finish will be at the People’s Park and it will go through the centre of Dun Laoghaire.
Everybody is welcome and admission seems to be free for all events and definitely for the Flag Parade. Find out more details on the website below.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 12 May
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Dublin Cycling Campaign Public Meeting

Central Hotel, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2
Iain Boal, the oral historian and cycling campaigner in the UK and US, will talk about The Green Machine Tour of Dublin, where he will meet local and elective community groups and publics to investigate the role of the commons in relation to Ireland’s post-boom economy. Iain is the author of The Green Machine, a book in which he describes how the bicycle is a green icon celebrated for its efficiency and the spare beauty of its design. Its freewheeling sociability and role as an instrument of women’s emancipation have made it a kind of “liberation technology”. Iain will be in Dublin for a week long residency as part of The Prosperity Project with artist Jesse Jones. Refresh Dublin – Node.js
18:00 – 20:00, Wed 15 May
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
Refresh Dublin is an event that promotes design, technology, usability and standards and provide a cross-discipline insight into all things design, interactive, creative and technical, so that different disciplines can learn from each other.
The topic this time is definitely more geeky than at other times ;-) but the speaker, Donovan Hutchinson, had a big impact on the smart phone version of the Dublin Event Guide here. He has now a different focus and will talk about “Introduction to Node.js” Donovan provides an overview of what Node.js is and when you might, or might not, want to use it. If you have never heard of Node.js then let me tell you that it has to do with Server-side Javascript and it will help you to build low level applications.
Admission is free, but pre-booking is required via the website below.

European Literature Night
18:30 – 21:00, Wed 15 May
Dublin (various locations)
“Words on the Street” is the title of the European Literature Night. Twelve Countries, Twelve Voices, Twelve Venues, One Great Evening is the summary of that night. In Dublin well known Irish people will read contemporary writing from twelve European countries in twelve venues, many of which are unusual and not normally easily accessible to the public.
Rosaleen Linehan, Naoise O’Muiri (Lord Mayor of Dublin), Eamon Morrissey, Seana Kerslake (IFtA shortlisted), Bryan Murray (actor), Ray Foley (98fm DJ), Rick O’Shea (2fm DJ), Sinead Desmond (Ireland AM), Mark Cagney (Ireland AM) and Niamh Sharkey (Children’s Laureate) will read in places such as Royal College of Surgeons, Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club, Little Museum of Dublin, Constitution Room in the Shelbourne Hotel, Taylor Galleries, Boston College, 6 Ely Place, Loreto College, The Sugar Club, Iveagh House, Newman House and Newman University Church.
A map and information booklet showing the location of the venues with information about the readers and readings, so that you can move from venue to venue, will be available from libraries in Dublin, Failte Ireland tourist offices, National Library and the venues. [Unfortunately that booklet is not available online. What a pity!)
The twelve participating countries will each be represented by a short (15 minutes) translated piece of a novel, poem or short story which will be read every 30 minutes so people can wander from venue to venue taking in readings from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain & the UK. The first reading in each venue starts at 18:30 and is repeated on the hour and half hour with the final reading at 21:00.
Sounds a bit like a Literary Culture Night. Admission is free and booking is not required.

Dublin Tribal Spirit – Drumming Circle
20:00 – 22:00, Fri 17 May
Lantern Centre, 17 Synge Street, Dublin 8
“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.
There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

Passport Control at Dublin Airport to be ramped up significantly
Today I found an article on rte.ie that explained “Dublin Airport testing ‘self-service’ border control” and when you read through it you find out that “self-service” terminals will replace (some of the) Immigration Officers (also called: garda in civilain clothes that check your passport).
The article here is not taking any sides, but most people might think that a self-terminal is reducing the control process, but think about this: Until about 3 years and for many many years before, you only had to show the OUTSIDE of your passport at Dublin airport and you were waved through. Then a dispute about pay (afaik) meant that the gardai started looking at every passport again, but I would be surprised if they really CHECKED anything. The process is so fast that it is close to impossible to see that something is odd.
The new self-service terminals will operate differently. They will scan your picture in the passport and will compare that with you in reality. A machine based control is a significantly ramp up of controls, because the machine will be a lot more alert than most Immigration Officers. Oh, and it will also go a LOT slower. Because even with the fastest scanner, the person putting his/her passport on the scanner will cause the delays. So expect longer queues! I will continue to go to the human being myself if there is a choice.

A great weekend to look forward! Let’s hope all the weather forecasts that tell us about lots of showers won’t come true! Ohh, I took some breathtaking pictures of Dublin during the week and I will put them up on the Facebook Page soon, so keep an eye out for them!

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
