Hi all!
This week it took a good bit longer than 24 hours to write this edition of the Dublin Event Guide. That’s a LOT of time! But I realise something more and more: I check through more than 400 webpages between Thursday evening and Friday evening to find events and I have realised that the websites are getting worse and worse. Some of the once really good ones are now dead and if it continues, I will have to put a lot more focus on direct notifications from people.
[ad]
You can’t do anything about the dismal websites but if you go to events, talk to the organiser. Tell him/her that you read about the event in the “Dublin Event Guide for Free Events”. And then tell them that should notify me by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com to make sure that their event will be included every time (as long as it is free!).
Tell your friends and family etc about the Dublin Event Guide and get them to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com and to also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide . Everyone benefits from it!
In my never ending quest for money to pay the Dublin Event Guide bills (EUR 170 per month) I have to ask you again if you can spare EUR 1 per month. If every subscriber would pay EUR 1 per YEAR, I wouldn’t have to ask you for money for the whole year, but unfortunately there are a few that are so nice and helpful to carry the rest. Are you prepared to share a bit of the load? Nowhere else you can achieve so much for just EUR 1 per month. Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm to help. Thanks!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the links in the Dublin News section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute.com etc) that you find in this e-zine/newsletter, you help the Dublin Event Guide because the trader gives a small commission to the advertiser (i.e. the Dublin Event Guide). Use these links as often as possible!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Today’s video clip tells you that it is ok to fail if you want to have a successful career, actually, it tells you that you HAVE to fail. youtu.be/hNQRRsL3R4A Have a look, it is good. (A little longer like all TED talks, but it is worth it.)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Colm MacE, Solomon B, Mariian B, Justin McC, Ronan O’S and Mary B were so wonderful to help with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This week will leave this section empty! Not because there is nothing to recommend, but because I am already sooo late sending this edition again that any further delay will make it worse and worse and worse.
Have a look at Temple Bar Trad Fest and the Dublin Flea Market and some of the interesting talks maybe. ;-)

Sencity – Multi-Sensory Music Event – Ticket Competition
Sat 09 February: 21:00-03:00 – RDS Concert Hall, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
Sencity is a multi-sensory music event where the audience cannot only hear but also feel, see, smell and taste the music – anybody is enabled to capture the music’s passion, diverse emotions, vibes and lyrics through different channels. Created and celebrated by people with and without hearing abilities. Sencity will be in Dublin for the first time. This unique multi-sensory live music event will take place on Sat 09 Feb in the RDS Concert Hall.
The organisers are not a big, sterile company, but five extremely enthusiastic and hard-working Germans who all studied in Holland and experienced this event there for the first time. They are working with a team of 16 deaf and hard of hearing young people from Dublin to make SencityDublin happen.
There will be live artists (Signmark, Kormac’s Big Band, The Wonder Villains, Torann Drums and Gavxmas), “aroma jockeys” who intensify the feeling of the songs performed with fitting scents, “food jockeys” who create sensations that impart what the music could taste like, make-up artists, masseurs, hair dressers and many more. The senses are fired up by laser and light shows that turn songs into colours, shapes and pictures. On stage, there are sign dancers translating lyrics and emotions into Irish Sign Language and one of the most exceptional features is the vibrating dance floor which responds to the music’s bass frequency. – Sounds like an amazing event!
Tickets are available at Ticketmaster (EUR 17.50) or at the door (EUR 24) and the link to ticketmaster is on the website: www.your-sencity.com/
The organisers have also made a pair of tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and if you want to win that pair of tickets, you only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with SENCITY in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on 05 February.

Skype Abuse Warning
I don’t normally include something like this, but I was directly affected and would like to warn you about something that seems to be happening a lot. Last week suddenly my Skype window popped up to tell me that I had been logged out from my account and a log in attempt was answered with the message that my account had been suspended, which was followed by a mail from Skype to tell me the same. The mail told me that there was suspicious behavious detected on my account and it contained the relevant suggestions how to re-enable the account.
It was a longish process to get the account enabled again and during my time talking to the support agent, I found out that phone calls were made from my account. When it was re-enabled I saw that in the 30 minutes between the account had been taken over and Skype had suspended it. 1x call was made to Liberia, 2x calls to the USA and 6x calls to Senegal!! Luckily the person making these calls didn’t get through so that only a small amount of money was taken from my account.
But if you have money in your account and if your password might be relatively easy (mine was!!) you should immediately strengthen the password. Add some numbers and maybe some Special Characters to make sure that you are not affected by this Skype Abuse!

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The first exhibition in the Goethe-Institut’s gallery The Return in 2013 features Dublin artist Alice Rekab who transplants a large-scale tower from Sierra Leone as a textile sculpture into the tiny gallery space.
The exhibition “Vector/Attractor” layers objects of attraction and their associations from multiple locations which intersect, are reconfigured and transformed through diverse narratives.
A large-scale tower is transplanted into the gallery space as a site for gathering, a sculptural form or a set for an unscripted event. An oversized plastic diamond becomes an object of preciousness excerpted from a film by Sierra Leonean comedy and performance group Stars Combine while a sculptural object is transported into the script.
Rekab explores, reconfigures and rethinks locations and positions of aggregation, attraction and spheres of influence alluding to the past while projecting into a future.
Alice Rekab lives and works in Dublin and London. She completed an MA in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmith University London. Recent exhibitions include evaInternational Limerick, Project Arts Centre Dublin, The Model Sligo and the Lir Academy Dublin. Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 27 Jan
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Romp around Dublin readying Ulysses
14:00, Sun 27 Jan
Forty Foot, Sandycove, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
Bloomsday is still a good bit away, but the Bloomsday Survival Kit team is already inviting to their first event. I will let them explain it:
Feeling inspired to read Ulysses? Join the Bloomsday Survival Kit team on a weekly romp around Dublin, reading as we go! Be prepared for high art and slap stick fun! We’ll start with the first two episodes (the one with the swim and the one with the Sh*t) at 14:00 on Sun 27 January in the Martello Tower in Sandycove. Following the reading there will be a ceremonial swim in the Forty Foot for those brave enough. Bring your towel, a copy Ulysses and a Bloomsday Survival Kit if you’re lucky enough to have one!
Then from Tuesday 05 Feb at 19:00 we’ll be roving round Dublin, reading and bringing Ulysses to life – in the places it happened (or did it?). Join us! You’ll end up in locations and positions from the big book, and explore the delicious underbelly of Joyce’s world. If you can’t join us in person, why not read along at home and have the thing read in time for Bloomsday.
What’s in the Bloomsday Survival Kit? A 50 page in-yer-pocket Manual and a bundle of props to help you explore and bring to life Ulysses and Bloomsday. Onehandle it to your hearts content! Imagine dancing the Glasnevin Shuffle – www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqcCeGRBZqo or listening to Simon Dedalus tickling the ivories in the Ormond Hotel www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o6ncj-1gxM. Check out www.facebook.com/BloomsdaySurvivalKit each week to find out where we’re off to!”

London is Burning – Documentary Screening
19:00 – 21:00, Tue 29 Jan
Jonathan Swift Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2
“London is Burning” is the title of this event. There will be a screening of the documentary ‘London is Burning: Painful Conversations’, followed by a discussion with the director, Dr Haim Bresheeth.
Seemingly coming from nowhere, the streets of London were lit by fires and wrecked by multiple rioting during the second week of August 2011. London is Burning’ was made during the months following the riots, and features a number of key activists and social theorists in conversation about this painful social event. Questions about the events still remain: Was this a disaster waiting to happen? Could it happen again? What does it tell us of the police and its communal concept? But more than anything, what does it say about the crisis of capitalism, and its corrosive effects on society and its moral values?
While it doesn’t say it explicitly, there is a high probability that admission is free. ( www.tcd.ie/sociology/events/seminar-series/ )

Dublin WiFi Day
11:00 – 17:00, Thu 31 Jan
Barnardos Square, Dame Street, Dublin 2
Digital Dublin is an initative designed to develop Dublin as a digital city and the roll out of free public WiFi is a big step forward for Digital Dublin. Dublin Free Wifi will be launched on Thursday and for the launch there is a “Dublin WiFi Day” taking place on Barnardo’s Square (the square directly beside City Hall) in Dame Street. Stop by to see what Dublin Free Wifi entails.
Free Wifi will be available in a number of locations and an (incomplete?) list is here:
Smithfield Square, Barnardo’s Square, Clarendon Street, St. Patrick’s Park, O’Connell Street Plaza / GPO, Temple Bar Square, Wolfe Tone Square, In front of the Convention Centre Dublin, Merrion Square, Henry Street, Grafton Street, Amphitheatre at Civic Offices.
Not a bad start, but clearly targetted for tourists. Some locations are odd, e.g. Barnardo’s Square because you never find anybody on this rather uninviting place. Others are missing on this list, like whole St. Stephen’s Green, the rest of O’Connell Street or the courtyard and the gardens of Dublin Castle. But let’s wait until we have ALL the facts. We will find out more on Thursday! ;-)

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Eejits in Kerry County Council who want drunken drivers
Kerry people are a special breed! Not all of them, but definitely their political representatives – and consequently also the people who have voted for these odd political representatives. The mad-cap -Rae family is involved again and if you follow Irish politics you will have heard of the former TD Jackie Healy-Rae (luckily now retired) and his youngest son Michael Healy-Rae who followed Jackie H-R as a TD and who proposed the stupid new number plate system that was introduced on 01 Jan ( www.independent.ie/national-news/2013-number-plates-to-be-changed-to-avoid-unlucky-13-3208978.html ) and who won a reality TV show with the help of 3600 phone calls to a voting line that were made from within Leinster House where the parliament is based ( www.thejournal.ie/michael-healy-rae-i-knew-nothing-about-it-164771-Jun2011/ ).
This time it is Kerry County Councillor Danny Healy-Rae, another son of Jackie Healy-Rae, who makes the headlines – for the wrong reasons. The stupid idea he dreamt up is that Gardai should issue permits to people in the most isolated parts of the country to allow them to drive after drinking alcohol.
Most straight-thinking people realise that this is indeed a stupid suggestion and many would just shake their head about another Healy-Rae nonsense, but the shocking thing is that Kerry County Council voted on that idea and are supporting it with 5 to 3 votes. Seven other councillors seem to be too afraid of their constituents to have an opinion and abstained and another 12 had gone home when the vote was taken.
So it is not just mad Healy-Rae, but there are more down there in Kerry! Luckily the opinion of Kerry County Council will be ignored and nothing will change about the drink driving laws, but it is incredible that this proposal wasn’t clearly defeated. So who were the 5 inspired people that voted for it? – Interesting: Michael O’Shea (FF), Michael Cahill (Ind), Bobby O’Connell (FG) and Danny Healy-Rae, – that is four out of the five – are pub owners! Yep, I can see now that the isolation of their constituents is their biggest concern and that it has absolutely nothing to do with their own businesses. Odd!!

So, let’s hope for some sun. And if there is bad weather, just go to all the indoor events! They are fun too.

The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
