Hi all!

Only a few more sleeps until Christmas! The events are fizzling out now the closer we get to Christmas, so this Dublin Event Guide will be a little “thinner” than at other times. There is always something happening in Dublin and many many things are free as you know if you are a regular Dublin Event Guide Reader. But Christmas Day is a total exception. It is impossible to find a restaurant that is open on Christmas Day and only in recent years some Spar/Centra-type shops open if they have employees that are not to pushed about Christmas (usually because it is not part of their religion/culture). Coming to Ireland for holidays over Christmas is definitely not a good idea if you don’t have family here. Maybe Tourism Ireland should have warning messages on their Facebook Page.

[ad]

Speaking of warning messages: In a few days Santa’s Grottos soon will get closed again for another year and the Christmas Markets will disappear again. I am not sure who to blame, but in case Santa was involved with the planning and running of the Christmas Markets in Dublin in any way, he did NOT a good job this year! Maybe we need warning messages as well that say “The name Christmas Market at an assembly of trading stalls doesn’t imply ANYTHING:” Have a look at the Dublin News section to find out more about this rather sad chapter!

Thanks for the people that used the links in the Dublin News section or the ads in the recent Dublin Event Guides to order goods and buy their Christmas presents. As I explained before, if you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute.com etc) that you find in this e-zine/newsletter, you help the Dublin Event Guide because the trader gives a small commission to the advertiser (i.e. the Dublin Event Guide). Use these links as often as possible in the Sales as well!! Please!!

And a huge thanks to Emma L who was the Dublin Event Guide reader ever that got me a Christmas present! I am looking forward to reading that book Emma! If you wanted to get me something as well, but didn’t get around to it or wanted to wait for the Sales, that’s all fine with me. ;-) Just stroll over to www.perfectresults.info/wishlist.htm and select what you would like to get me.

And now the part I hate: I don’t like begging! :-( But we are still EUR 70 away from the EUR 170 I need every month to cover the Dublin Event Guide cost. So, I guess I will have to say what most kids say to their parents: “Mom, Dad, don’t give me any presents, just give me money.” Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

Finally: If you have to give last minute Christmas presents, you can always you’re your friends a present of a subscription to the Dublin Event Guide. They will think of you 52 (!!) times every year (and it doesn’t cost you a cent … but you don’t have to tell them that!! ;-) ) Send them to www.dublineventguide.com and tell them to put their name in the SUBSCRIBE box on the right hand side and tell them that you pre-arranged that for them! :-) make sure that you and they also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide . Donations are happily received here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Any amount helps!

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

This week I invite you to a walk on a tightrope. It is a balancing act between ultimate Christmas atmosphere and total commercialism. For most, certain movies (e.g. Home Alone), TV programmes (e.g. Late Late Toy Show), songs (e.g. Fairytale of New York) or foods (e.g. Turkey) epitomise (means: “embody the essential characteristics of…”) Christmas. But for others Christmas has arrived when they see certain ads on TV. Sure these ads are commercial, but the feeling of Christmas that YOU feel can not be bought! :-) Here are the two ads that many people would list as THE Christmas ads. The first one is a Guinness ad and if you have lived in Ireland for a good few years or if you even grew up here, you will definitely know it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWfdbYbDVzg

The second ad is the famous Coca-Cola ad www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogetBqMgau0

Enjoy Christmas! (No matter how commercial it might be!)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Gerry T and Gerard L were so wonderful to help with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

This week I suggest that you try out the Chocolate Factory Christmas Market and the Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market and do not forget Farmleigh House, especially if you have children. The market there is no Christmas Market, but the children’s events are great.

And apart from this? Enjoy Christmas!!!! :-)

Christmas Markets in Dublin

The Good, The bad and The Ugly! Yes, I had planned to tell you all the good and the bad things about Christmas Markets and then I had to find out that there is nothing good. It is a shocking and seriously disappointing state of affairs. There are lots of markets this year, but none of them really deserve the name Christmas Market. I admit, that I am a bit of a Christmas Market purist and having been in Germany at two markets just in the beginning of this month, raises the expectations. But come on! Can they not at least try??

The worst is the Docklands Market, not because it is awful, not it is just about ok, but the shocking aspect is that it is getting worse and worse since the current organising company took over. It seems they have never seen a Christmas Market. Actually that would probably apply to all organisers in Dublin.

At a whopping 8 years, the Docklands Christmas Market, this is the grand father of Christmas Markets in Dublin. For 6 years the market improved continually and then 2011 happened. The Christmas Market 2010 was run by a German events company (Go GmbH) and was the closest it ever got to a proper Christmas market. But then in 2011 a new organiser took over and it all went downhill.

The Dame Court Market is no Christmas Market, it is just a market at Christmas. The Francis Street Christmas Art Fair seemingly didn’t even take place (I was there last Sunday and not a single stall or sign!). The Chocolate Factory Market is the first year this year, so I will let it off and will assess it next year. Farmleigh House doesn’t compete as it is a farmers market and separately lots of Christmas related events take place for kids.

That leaves the only one that got the idea about Christmas markets at least partially and that is the Christmas Market in Dun Laoghaire!

Maybe I should offer Christmas Market Consultancy Services! :-P

Krav Maga in the Irish Independent

Some of you know that another one of my spare time activities apart from teh Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is teaching self-defence at www.kravmagaireland.com We teach 2-day courses or 12 week courses and in my opinion, everybody should do some sort of self-defence course in the same way as every one has to know the basic rules of the road. In my somewhat biased opinion our courses are the best and I can’t recommend them more, but if you want to do your course somewhere else, then go ahead. Just make sure that you learn how to deal with potentially dangerous situations.

The reason why I mention the Krav Maga Ireland courses today is because the Irish Independent wrote about them: See the article here www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=466324143424917 and more details are here www.kravmagaireland.com/

Santa does NOT travel in a sleigh! No way! It is worse!

For the geeks among us, this description is a must read: www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/santa/physics.asp It describes the “Physics of Santa and his Reindeer”. Don’t let the kids read this, because the conclusion will not please them! I got this interesting and highly scientific description as an e-mail around 1990 (!), so keep in mind that since then the world population grew a lot further, which increases the number of Santa’s clients by quite a lot. So if it was difficult then, it is even worse now! ;-)

Santa’s Flight Path

If you want to check where Santa is on Monday evening, you can follow him on www.noradsanta.org/en/
NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command is tracking Santa’s movements and I was told by friends that the NORAD website can be a huge help to get the children to bed on Christmas Eve. The son of a friend, who we shall call Lucas (not his real name), kept checking NORAD’s website to follow the flight path. When he checked first, Santa was far away, but then he came closer and closer to Ireland and a few hours later when the discovered that Santa was in Scotland, Lucas got seriously alarmed. He immediately insisted to go to bed and when his mother suggested to read him a story, he declared with huge terror in his voice: “Mom, there is no time for that!! Santa is already in Scotland!”. :-)

Opportunities

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dame District Christmas Market

12:00 – 23:00, Fri 21 Dec

Dame Court, Dublin 2

The Dame District Christmas Market is taking place the second time this year. There are a few stalls in white plastic tents with a few fir tree branches attached to them. If it was called Dame District Market, I would agree. But don’t expect any Christmas atmosphere. The promise of “bigger and shinier” does not materialise, but there is one significantl advantage of this market over other markets: The entertainment in the adjacent pubs and from a (VERY small) stage does make it a good bit more interesting. The stalls are selling handmade crafts, jewelry, toys and food. So, give it a go, just don’t expect to much Christmas atmosphere.

The linteresting and impressive line up for the next few days will be:

Fri 21 Dec: 17:00 CrowBlackChicken, 18:00 Rocher, 20:00 The young Folk, 21:00 Juliet’s Rescue, 22:00 The Hot Sprockets
Sat 22 Dec: 20:00 Happy Hour, 22:00 Created by Comets
Sun 23 Dec: 17:00 Rachel McCormack, 18:00 Simon Fagan, 20:00 Third Smoke, 21:00 Dem Fools

The market is very disappointing. Where in previous years up to 80 traders offered their goods, it seems to be less than 20 this year. There will also be food stalls and a carousel and “Victorian fairground attractions”. The market is open until 20:00. Admission is free.

Friday Night Game Social: Khet

18:00 – 20:00, Fri 21 Dec

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

Come to this “Friday Night Game Social: Khet” and and join in for an evening of combining strategy games with lasers.

Khet is an abstract strategy board game in which two players fire lasers to strike and remove Egyptian-themed game pieces from the board. Most of the pieces are mirrored on one or more sides, allowing players to alter the trajectory of the laser beam each time it is fired by changing the position of the playing pieces. When a piece is struck by a laser on a non-mirrored side, it is eliminated from the game. The object is to hit your opponent’s pharaoh with a laser, thereby claiming victory, all the while protecting your own king.

Admission is free, but booking is required.

The Last Rave on Earth

20:00, Fri 21 Dec

Sweeney Mongrel’s, 32 Dame Street, Dublin 2

I normally don’t include DJ events, simply because there are too many. Every pub and club has a DJ and I wouldn’t be able to differntiate between an outstanding DJ and a guy who plays MP3s from his iPOD … some would say there is no difference, but that would be a little harsh. ;-)

Anyway, the reason why I include this event is because it is meant to be the last rave on earth IF and only IF the interpretation of the Mayan calender comes true that claims the earth will come to an end next Friday. I’d say the Mayans just had no space on their calender anymore and decided to add the years after 2012 in the next “print” run!

Anyway (2!), here is what is taking place at the last rave: The Zombie Circus presents
+ 1st Floor: Lex Woo – Dj Mog-Y – Ras Tinny with Reggae/Funk/Soul/Hip-Hop/Breakbeat/Afrobeat/Jazz/Electro
+ Ground Floor: Kurt Coca ine – Claire Meow Catt with Rock & Roll / Funk / Soul / Disco/ 80’s Cheese/ 90’s Classics
and lots of home-grown stuff

Moving Crib

11:30 – 18:00, Sat 22 Dec

Saint Martin’s Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square, Dublin 1

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.

Dame District Christmas Market

12:00 – 23:00, Sat 22 Dec

Moving Crib

11:30 – 18:00, Mon 24 Dec

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

08:58, Tue 25 Dec

Dublin (various locations)

Have a great Christmas!! Enjoy the presents and the good food.

If your Christmas this year is a little scaled down because you can’t afford excesses from previous years, just make sure that you enjoy it in whatever way you celebrate it. It doesn’t have to be a turkey!

If you know people that are on their own, check in with them and if they feel alone/loneley maybe you have a bit of time for them. But be aware that not everyone who celebrates Christmas on his/her own is feeling alone. So, try to find the right balance.

Christmas Day Swim

09:00, Tue 25 Dec

Forty Foot, Sandycove, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin

At this yearly (self-organised) event, hundreds of brave/crazy/tough (you choose the appropriate word) dive into the shockingly cold Irish Sea at the Forty Foot in Sandycove and leave the water soon after lobster pink due to the low temperatures.

The Forty Foor was once a Gentlemen’s Bathing place were clothing was not required, but nowadays everybody is welcome and the surprisingly liberal approach from the past is not the done thing anymore.

Events Coming Up

Dublin Mountain Partnership – Guided Walks

The Dublin Mountain Partnership runs guided walks in the Dublin mountains every month. They are at times quite strenous and only for very experienced walkers, but some other walks have only a moderate degree of diffculty. For all walks you have to pre-register on the Friday before the walk this doesn’t fit perfectly into the publishing schedule of the Dublin Event Guide, so I am only listing their walks in this section. The next walks are on 27 Dec (15km, 5hrs, Strenuous) and on New Year’s Day (01 Jan) (12km, 3.5 hrs, moderate). Find all information at www.dublinmountains.ie/news/upcoming_events/?no_cache=1 and remember that you will have to pre-book well in advance!

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Powercity Warning

I experienced an interesting “This is Odd!” this week, but it developped a little futher and I might have to escelate it, so I have decided to leave it out for now. I will definitely write about it at some stage, but not yet this week. For this reason there won’t be a This is ODD this week and probably also not next week. Next week I will try to keep the newsletter as short as possible and just focus on the essentials. But my “This is Odd” life experiences will continue on 04 Jan!

–Advertisement————————————

Now, at the end of the last pre-Christmas Dublin Event Guide, let me wish you a wonderful Christmas with lots of nice experiences, good food, nice presents and some quiet time (if you wish!). I will send you another Dublin Event Guide before the year is out, but I know that some of you will not see it because you are just having too good at time. Have a good start of the new year if you are not checking in next week, for all others. I will be in touch on the other side of Christmas! There is stuff happening as well in the week after Christmas!
But now enjoy the last bit of pre-Christmas spirit and then MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!

Have an event-full time,

–Joerg

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
