Hi all!

This week the Dublin Event Guide will be earlier with you than normal. This is unfortunately not because I found the solution to the Gordian Knot ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordian_Knot ) of the late completion of the weekly e-zine/newsletter. Instead it is because I took a different approach this week and worked until late/early morning every evening this week because I am going away for a long weekend from Friday until Monday this weekend. So I cancelled all my other activities, started early and might miss a few events, but at least I can catch my plane to Germany on Friday morning without having to worry how to finish this weeks edition. Sure, I could have taken a break this week, but I didn’t miss one week in 286 weeks and I didn’t want to break that track record this week either.

[ad]

I will be at Christmas Markets for most of the weekend and will enjoy Glühwein and delicious food. The forecast is for rain OR snow and the temperature is expected to be around -3. So with a bit of luck, I will come home with the first snow pictures but either way, I will be back with a “belly full” of Christmas Markets. Good news is that in Dublin the “main” Christmas Market is starting as well this weekend. The Docklands Christmas Market does start and will run until Christmas.

With Christmas coming up, most of you will probably buy a good few presents online and while you are doing that, you can help the Dublin Event Guide. Many online retailers don’t pay for advertisement anymore, but they pay a small commission on sales that was the result of a promotion. So most of the ads you see in this e-zine week after week are not making any money UNLESS you click on it and then also complete your purchase in the same process. Without any cost to you, about 5% of the purchase value (50 cent from a EUR 10 buy) is paid to the “advertiser”. So if you want to buy books, buy them (for the lowest price anyway) through the Book Depository link in this newsletter. You get the best price and don’t pay any postage if you buy from Book Depository. If you want to buy from Groupon or Lastminute.com also do please click on the banners EVERY TIME before you do. Please use the ad links in this newsletter. And this week I am listing another few online stores that you might want to use. Check the Dublin News section for that. Remember that it doesn’t cost a single cent to you, but that you help the Dublin Event Guide HUGELY!

And one other thing: It hasn’t happened yet in five years, but there will be a first at some point and I am ready for it! :-) In case you feel the urge to send me a Christmas present, you can simply choose it from my wishlist on Amazon.co.uk and get it directly sent to me. I have lots of wishes in all different price categories and I will be eternally grateful. I know some of the things I am interested in are a little odd, but, hey, that’s me! LOL Here is a selection of things from my letter to Santa: www.perfectresults.info/wishlist.htm

And the last thing: Please keep spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide. Tell people that they should subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com (on the right hand side) and then also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide . Donations are happily received here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Any amount helps!

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

Today I have a short story for you as told by Leah Pearlman, the co-founder of the Happiness Institute. In May 2011 she had the following story on her “Dharma Comics”, a comic blog in which she draws on life to explore personal and universal truth:

I was recently told of an African tribe that does the most beautiful thing.
When someone does something hurtful and wrong, they take the person to the center of town, and the entire tribe comes and surrounds him. For two days they’ll tell the man every good thing he has ever done.
The tribe believes that every human being comes into the world as Good, each of us desiring safety, love, peace, happiness.
But sometimes in the pursuit of those things people make mistakes. The community sees misdeeds as a cry for help.
They band together for the sake of their fellow man to hold him up, to reconnect him with his true Nature, to remind him who he really is, until he fully remembers the truth from which he’d temporarily been disconnected: “I AM GOOD”. ( dharmacomics.com/post/17649313150/i-was-recently-told-of-an-african-tribe-that )

Sounds like a great idea to me! Imagine how this could change our world!? How could you use that concept even if you don’t have a tribe supporting you?
One possibility would be that you stand in front of a mirror in the morning and in the evening if you either were judging yourself or others in a negative way and remind yourself of the good things about yourself. Forgive yourself and realise that YOU ARE GOOD!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Alison P, Sandra McD, Marie D, Amanda L and Donna M were so wonderful to help with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

This week will be away and can’t enjoy the events in Dublin with you. But I have other events to enjoy and will have loads of Gluehwein on REAL :-P Christmas Markets. So maybe I should not give you any recommendations and just let you decide on your own? But just this week we have arrived at an all time max with 190 free events in one week! An astonishing number. And with sooo many free events, it could easily happen that you just can’t see the wood for the trees anymore. So despite my absence, here is what I would do:

I would definitely go to the Docklands Christmas Market, I also would definitely go to Shutterbug’s Vintage Clothing Kilo Sale, it sounds like a cool and quirky event – if you are interested in buying clothes! ;-) Oxjam is another Saturday event I would have a look at. Then the Dun Laoghaire Ice Sculpture Carving would also be on my (long!) list of To-Dos.

On Sunday the Affordable Gift Fair in Dun Laoghaire and the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market in Dublin 8 are on my list and I would definitely go there.

So, at least there are some recommendations for the weekend, the rest you have to find out yourself! :-)

Raffle for Scuba Diving and Phone

I don’t usually do that, but a few good friends will go to Haiti soon to stay in tents without water and electricity for two weeks to build houses with the Haven Partnership for people that are STILL living in temporary huts after the earthquake in Haiti more than 2 years ago. In addition to a week of hard work, everybody who is prepared to help, has to bring EUR 4,500 for building materials. So my friends have to raise funds and one of the ideas is a raffle. You buy a ticket for EUR 5 and have a very good chance to win a Scuba Diving course or a high-quality Nokia phone. Click on the yellow-ish banner below to enter! www.dalkeyscubadivers.com/scuba_competition/scuba_competition.html

Free events are (hopefully) unaffected by the Budget

This week’s budget announcement did not come as a total shock because of all the bits of information that were fed to media etc beforehand, but it nevertheless was painful because everyone got affected and some severely. The only area, though, that is relatively secure in 2013 and will thrive in an exceptional way is the events sector. I have an ambivalent opinion about The Gathering (even the name is stupid!) but there is reason for an optimistic view on the amount and quality of events that we will find in Ireland next year. Let’s hope that many are remaining to be free. There is a risk that the “shaking down the visitors for money” extends to events as well, but let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Opportunities

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

80 traders are selling their goods and there will be stalls with food and mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts etc. A carousel and “Vitorian fairground attractions” will also be there. The market is open until 20:00 on weekdays and until 22:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.

In the Academy Discourse “Ambiguous Republic: Ireland in the 1970s” Diarmaid Ferriter (Prof of Modern History at UCD) will examine the key years of the 70s, when after half a century of independence, questions were being asked about the old ways of doing things. He will consider the widespread social, cultural, economic and political upheavals of the decade, a decade when Ireland joined the EEC; when for the first time a majority of the population lived in urban areas; when economic challenges abounded; which saw too an increasingly visible feminist moment, and institutions including the Church began to be subjected to criticism.

‘Gift of the desert. Greek writing on paper from ancient Egypt’ is a talk by Prof.Brian McGing (TCD) who is Regius Professor of Greek and Head of the School of Histories and Humanities at Trinity College Dublin.

Towards the end of the 19th century, pieces of ancient writing paper began to turn up in large quantities from rubbish dumps in the Egyptian countryside. They were mostly written in Greek, but also in Arabic, Aramaic and the various forms of the Egyptian language. The great German historian of Rome, Theodor Mommsen, is said to have declared that, in terms of Classical scholarship, the 20th century would be the century of papyrology. So how did it turn out? What do papyrologists do, and what has this huge new data-bank of evidence told us about the ancient world and our relation to it?

Dublin Mountain Partnership – Guided Walks

The Dublin Mountain Partnership runs guided walks in the Dublin mountains every month. They are at times quite strenous and only for very experienced walkers, but some other walks have only a moderate degree of diffculty. For all walks you have to pre-register on the Friday before the walk this doesn’t fit perfectly into the publishing schedule of the Dublin Event Guide, so I am only listing their walks in this section. The next walks are on 08 Dec (10km, 3.5 hrs, moderate) , 16 Dec (4km, 2 hrs, Easy) and a second walk on 16 Dec (11.5km, 4hrs, Moderate) and 27 Dec (15km, 5hrs, Strenuous). Find all information at www.dublinmountains.ie/news/upcoming_events/?no_cache=1 and remember that you will have to pre-book!

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

How many Santa’s are there!?!?!?!

Can you remember when you were a child? How did this Santa-thing work for you? I grew up in a Santa-free country (yep, deprived childhood!!), so I don’t get it at all. Let’s assume you are around 3-5 years of age. At that age, you do know how many dads, how many mums and how many uncles and aunts you have, right. But now something strange happens.

You go with your parents to a shopping centre and they bring you to this grotto/hut thing. “Hey, there is Santa! And he knows me and my name and he has a present for me. Cool!” – All great and lots of fun. Now you have seen Santa. But wait! You go with your parents to another shopping centre and there is a guy that looks more or less the same and calls himself Santa as well. Then you go to a Christmas Market and there he is again: Santa! Then you go to the lighting of the Christmas Tree and again he is there!

At this stage, even a 3-5 year old should start wondering! This guy is just everywhere and somehow he always arrives before you. If it is the same guy, then he seems to run like mad from one place to the other. But if there is more than one guy, then which one is the REAL Santa? And how come there are more than one?

And WAIT! If Santa runs from shopping centre to shopping centre in Dublin, who is making my presents on the North Pole???

But it gets worse! On Christmas Eve for the last bit of shopping your are dragged along to a shopping centre again and there he is again. Soon afterwards you go home and not much later your parents show you on the computer the Norad Radar track of Santa’s sleigh ride to all the children in the world? WTF??? This old round lazy guy was just sitting in the shopping centre in Dundrum and now he is on a sleigh in Australia? ..on his way to Dublin? How did he get there? Daddy always takes ages to drive from our home to granny. Why is daddy so slow and Santa so fast? And why did Santa not stay here from earlier? He already was sitting on a sack of presents in Dublin?

What is it that stops children from wondering even about the basics? And we are not even considering that all the Santas in the Shopping Centres look somewhat different to each other!

Very odd! ;-)

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
