Hi all!
I managed to break all records this week. I was burdened with little technical problem, but apart from that I was as slow as never before and for that reason this is the latest Dublin Event Guide ever. Inexcusable, I know. The only saving is that there is now this wonderful and cool Dublin Event Guide Smart Phone App so even if you weren’t able to do your weekend preparation earlier today, at least you can bring the Dublin Event Guide now with you if you have a Smart Phone. m.dublineventguide.com
[ad]
I can still not use it properly and hope that a kind soul will find a HTC One phone for me. :-P
This week is surprisingly busy with different events. Nothing huge, but some interesting festivals, especially Science Week and Dublin Book Festival. Have a look as well in the Dublin News for the information about how you can support the organisers of the Dublin City Soul Festival.
Remember also to tell everybody about the Dublin Event Guide. Send them to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on the right hand side.
And if you like the new smart phone app, think about how much you would pay elsewhere for such a wonderful and helpful new service and consider donating that money for the up-keep of the Dublin Event Guide. I need to find EUR 170 every month to pay the cost for sending the Dublin Event Guide. So check your pockets and send me all your change. ;-) Any amount helps! Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
We are more than 10,800 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and are growing every week. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
My quote for you this week is one that you might need to read two or three times:
“Living your dreams is not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you that makes you live your dreams.”
All clear? If not, this is what I see: It is not just about “living your dream”. That is not what most people simply do or can choose to do. Instead it is all about how you react to and deal with the things that happen in your live. If you deal with the things in the right/best way, then you will live your dreams.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Victoria M. C. and Padraig K were the wonderful people that helped with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
It is November and that should be one of the quietest months of the year, but this week is just super busy. There are four (!) runs (but only one is free). And there are four (!!) festivals that either finish, start or are in full swing this week: Design Week, Science Week, Dublin Book Festival and YARN-Bray Storytelling Festival. That doesn’t look like a quiet November.
Now, what events would I pick? Hmmm, Have a look at the Science Week events. Then also the Dublin Mish Mash on Saturday and the Exchange Art & Craft Market on Saturday. On Sunday I recomment the Fusion Sundays Market and definitely the Italian Food Market “Sagra dell’Arosticino”.
On Monday have a look at the Mexcian Spirits event if you are into Mezcal. On Tuesday, the Milk & Cookies Stories and the Alchemist Cafe have to battle it out. On Wednesday my choice would be Pitchify. And on Thursday, I gave we (I!) have to give up our resistance and join in in the Christmas Spirit when the lights are switched on in Grafton Street MUCH too early.

Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App
Did you try out the new smart phone app? I w ill leave this information here for another week or so, so that everybody has seen it! :-)
“Dublin for Free” is the Dublin Event Guide on the go! It is a web app that works on most smartphones and will allow you to bring the “Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events)” with you when you are out and about. It will also allow you to check out the current events when you are away from your computer or when the e-zine arrives late AGAIN on a Friday evening. The web app works on Android and on iOS and you can directly access it by putting m.dublineventguide.com in your mobile browser. There is an app in the iOS store and it will be in the Google Play store in the next few days, but you don’t need to dwonload anything.
When you went to m.dublineventguide.com on your browser and you want to put an icon on your homescreen, just do this:
For iOS:
+ When you’re looking at a web page, just hit “+” and select “Add to Home Screen”.
For Android:
+ Bookmark m.dublineventguide.com
+ Go to the home screen you want to add the link to
+ Long-press in an empty space to bring up the “Add to Home Screen” menu
+ Select “Shortcuts”
+ Select “Bookmark”
+ Choose your bookmark!
I will exlain a few features in the coming weeks, but for now, I suggest you check it out and explore it for yourself. The web app will not replace the weekly newsletter, instead it will complement it and will make the Dublin Event Guide better usable.
This wonderful app was created by iQ Content for free for you!! iQ Content is a user experience design consultancy. They design and build digital experiences for mobile, tablet and desktop that help clients achieve results for their business. And the great people in iQ Content are Dublin Event Guide Users, but wanted to make it more usable and mobile, so they created a wonderful new design, built a backend, beautified the e-zine AND wrote an app for us, Absolutely amazing! And all that for you for free. Check them out at www.iqcontent.com It was a big team that worked on it for thousands of hours (!!) and I will list all the names in the coming weeks, but today, I want to thank the Managing Director of iQ Content Morgan McKeagney and the Director of Innovation Ciarán Harris who was the main driver behind the project and who is an amazingly supportive and hard working individual who you can absolutely rely on.
If you like the app and want to join me in thanking iQ Content for all the work they did, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “THANKS IQ CONTENT” I will aggregate your thanks and will forward them.

Better Together Video Competition – Support the Soul Festival!
The Better Together Campaign is running again. Better Together intends to generate support for hundreds of charities, community groups, clubs and associations across the country by encouraging the public to support the good causes. Better Together was founded in 2010 by The Wheel (A support and representative body connecting community and voluntary organisations and charities across Ireland).
One of the components of the Better Together campaign is a video competition. 120 charities from all over Ireland (from animal welfare organisations via mental health support groups a wheelchair karate club) have submitted their videos and can win a prize of EUR 3,000 if they get enough support. And this is where you come in. You can support a charity by voting for their video. Voting will be open until 19 November and you can vote once every 24 hours until then. Voting started on 24 Sept and some charities already have thousands of votes.
The Musical Youth Foundation is one of the charities and they need some help! You know the Musical Youth Foundation if you have ever heard of or been at the brilliant Dublin City Soul Festival. Because it is the Musical Youth Foundation, founded by Chris Maher, which runs this yearly free festival tirelessly for the last 6 years. If you ever have enjoyed the Soul Picnic in May in Merrion Square or any other Soul Festival event, now is your time to give back. Vote for the Musical Youth Foundation at www.bettertogether.ie/content/music-better-together-2012 and vote often!
I am personally a big fan of the Soul Festival, have been (together with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir) a contributor/performer over the years and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is an official media partner of the Soul Festival, so I will definitely vote at www.bettertogether.ie/content/music-better-together-2012 over the next 10 days.

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

100 Objects
23 Oct – 02 Dec
National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7
Fintan O’Toole has chosen 99 remarkable objects, each of which opens a window on to an important moment in Irish history. You are invited to help choose the 100th object. Most come from the great trove of the National Museum of Ireland, a resource that is itself one of the wonders of Ireland. Others are from a variety of other institutions. They are not intended to be the 100 most remarkable objects on the island, or even to be a representative sample of the great collections. They are chosen simply for their ability to illuminate moments of change, development or crisis.
The exhibition in Collins Barracks shows the 10 items shortlisted to be the 100th object in the series. There is a public vote online (100objects.ie) and a ballot sheet in the Museum where you can help to choose which object defines our modern times.
Open: Tuesday-Saturday 10:00-17:00, Sunday 14:00-17:00. Closed Mondays and Bank Holidays

Visions of Splendour
Fri 16 Nov – 02 Dec
Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin
An exhibition of paintings inspired by the glasshouses at the National Botanic Gardens. Michael Dillon, known more for his decorative painting and mural work, has found a compelling distraction from walls in the palaces of light and reflection at the National Botanic Gardens. The combination of exotic flora, ambitious ironwork and glazing offer him an exciting opportunity to create and design work with his own special vision and veuve. An exhibition of paintings both large and small, which offers the spectator an intriguing and varied display. www.botanicgardens.ie/news/events.htm

Design Week 2012
09:00, Fri 09 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The Design Week 2012 takes place from 05-11 Nov. It is a week during which design organisations, collectives, colleges, companies and studios package and promote design related events. There are walks, talks, launches, exhibitions and workshops and the audience is designers who design things, the business community who purchase design services and the public who are the end users of all designers’ services.
A large amount of events take place over the 7 days of the festival and most of them are free, however some require pre-booking.
It being a Design Week, it seems that the website designer had to go the extra mile TOO FAR! Unfortunately the website is fancy but not overly easy to read if you have a smaller screen. It is also a pity that there is no downloadable PDF that shows all events. But if you go to www.designweek.ie/full-schedule/ and click on the date between 05 and 11, you will find all the relevant information. Fancy, but more work. I guess that is the price you have to pay sometimes for a nice look!?
A slightly easier overview of some of the Design Week events and of other architecture and design related events can regularly be found on www.pivotdublin.com/index.php/agenda

Design Week 2012
09:00, Sun 11 Nov

Science Week
10:00, Sun 11 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The Science Week will take place from 11-18 November and is filled with about 600 events throughout the whole country. The website looks nice, but it didn’t work for me. Hopefully it will work for you. And if it does, go to EVENTS and then to ADVANCED SEARCH. Now you should be able to select exactly what you are looking for and get your nicely customised programme. Unfortuantely I only was shown the first page and the rest failed, but as I said, I hope it will work for you. www.scienceweek.ie/events/find-events.html

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 11 Nov
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Yvonne Scott – about the use of landscape
16:00 – 17:00, Tue 13 Nov
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8
Sometimes I just have to leave the goobledigook from curators in tact. The entertainment value is huge:
Yvonne Scott (art historian and lecturer, TCD) discusses the use of landscape in the work of artist Sidney Nolan, and explores the artists appropriation of established motifs and their reconfiguration to question ideas of national identity in a range of images, including the much celebrated Ned Kelly Series which is featured in the IMMA exhibition. This talk takes the form of an illustrated presentation and is followed by a closing discussion on selected works in the galleries.
Come again?? What is that about National Identity in images?
I’d say the talk is a lot more accessible than the description of it!
Admission is free, but booking is required on the website. The talk will take place in the Johnston Suite.

Milk & Cookies Stories
18:30 – 22:00, Tue 13 Nov
Exchange Dublin, Upper Exchange Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Milk & Cookies Stores is a Storytelling Open Mic Night on the second Tuesday of each month. The group is founded on the belief that everyone has a story to tell and you can do just aht in a friendly atmosphere. It doesn’t matter if you have a story to tell or just want to listen. You are welcome either way.
Every month there is a theme and this month it will be stories about Bad Things. “About those times when you saw danger coming like a tidal wave of…danger and just let it wash over you. Like a dangershower. Sort of like in The Day After Tomorrow when no-one would listen to the scientists and then they ended up living in a library while the world rearranged itself. Or like real life. Where that is also happening.”
Another component of the Milk & Cookies Stories night is the Bake-off: You bring your finest treats and have them battle for King of the Cookies. “Special prize this month for the baker who comes up with the most entertaining “Warning” to go with their entry. The winner will receive a lovely prize as well as a round of applause from the appreciative audience.”

Science Week
10:00, Fri 16 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The Science Week will take place from 11-18 November and is filled with about 600 events throughout the whole country. The website looks nice, but it didn’t work for me. Hopefully it will work for you. And if it does, go to EVENTS and then to ADVANCED SEARCH. Now you should be able to select exactly what you are looking for and get your nicely customised programme. Unfortuantely I only was shown the first page and the rest failed, but as I said, I hope it will work for you. www.scienceweek.ie/events/find-events.html
There is a certain focus on school children in the Science Week, but there are PLENTY events for us grown ups too! Have a look!

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Children’s Referendum – Difficult decision
I once was very active in politics and still have a big interest for it and for democratic reasons, I am a big proponent (Proponent: A person who advocates [is in favour of] a theory, proposal, or project.) of using your right to vote whenever this is possible. So I would strongly suggest that you use your right to vote in the Children’s Referendum if you have that right. I don’t have the right and I know many of you in our 12,000+ strong Dublin Event Guide Community don’t have that right either. If you were allowed to, would you vote Yes or No?
I find it difficult to decide. Like everybody, I am very much in favour of children’s rights and the government and some organisations that are involved with looking after children want us to think that only a “Yes” vote is good for children. But in recent days I start having my concerns. I don’t think something terrible will happen to children if the decision is Yes on Saturday, but I do think that the constitutional amendment is badly prepared and ignores many aspects the tiny and badly organised No-side rightly raised. In addition I am not convinced that the current articles in the constitution are in soo terrible need of replacement that we need to replace them with something that ignores quite a number of issues.
So, while I am in favour of the right change, I would probably vote NO to force the government to take the arguments of the No-side into consideration. After that is done, I would vote Yes the next time (if the referendum is still needed). I know this delay would not be ideal for a small number of children, but I think it is more important to get it right the first time.
By the way, I am not talking about the slightly off the wall No arguments expressed here: sovereignindependent.com/flyers/APSFlyer.pdf but about the interesting assessment that is described here: www.thejournal.ie/readme/no-campaign-childrens-referendum-649534-Oct2012/
Incompetent Government AGAIN
Didn’t the previous government screw up enough for us to deserve a break? Well, it seems the gods are not with us because the current government seems to be not much better. Enda Kenny, who surprisingly was crowned “European of the Year” (www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/kenny-to-receive-european-of-the-year-award-today-573403.html ) has zero control over his bungling cabinet. The Health Minister James Reilly is entrenched in disturbing stories that sound as if they are leftovers from the previous government. Phil Hogan, the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, is as talented and suitable in his job as Martin Cullen was in the previous government. And now the government impressed with their incompetence again: The Supreme Court has ruled today that the Government used public money to influence the upcoming referendum, which is hugely undemocratic because it doesn’t allow a “fair, equal and impartial” process. www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/supreme-court-overturns-referendum-campaign-challenge-573452.html If FOUR Irish Parties (Fianna Fail, Greens, Fine Gael and Labour) all have shown that they are unsuitable to be in government, then we have a bit of a problem!

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
