A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

After a management change last year, it is not clear how many active stalls/sellers are currently still there and the market could do with some sprucing up and weeding out, but some people still find what they are looking for.

The Mexican Tallship “The Cuauhtémoc” will be in Dublin for five days and you are invited to visit the ship while it is at Sir Rogerson’s Quay. The ship is a sail training vessel of the Mexican Army and it was built in 1982 in Bilbao, Spain. The Cuauhtémoc was in Dublin before, so some of you might recognise it again: In 2012 the ship was here as part of the Tall Ship Races and at that time 23,000 visitors came on board during the Dublin visit.

A new weekly Farmer’s Market is starting in Dalkey this week with over 20 vendors selling a wide variety of foods and an eclectic selection of arts and crafts. Admission is free.

“E Day” is the Spanish Language Fiesta for everybody who speaks or learns/wants to learn Spanish.

E Day in Dublin runs from 11:00-16:00 and there will be face painting, a crafts workshop for children, a Flamenco workshop/show, a guided tour to the exhibition ‘Roots in the wind’, a food fair, a cookery competition, a quiz and there will also be free Spanish lessons and a book bazaar. The IFI Open Day is back. There will be 15 film screenings including Back to the Future, Jaws & Monty Python’s Life Of Brian, three sneak previews, behind-the-scenes tours, membership discounts and children’s workshops.

Every Saturday (until 28 August) the Yoga Hub will run an Outdoor Yoga Class in St. Stephen’s Green near the bandstand.

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?

HOME\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.

The exhibition will run from 01 May until 19 July and is open from Tuesday-Sunday (Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00). Admission is free.

Gravitation 2015 will showcase urban culture and the huge selection of alternative sports: the power and skill of skateboarding, BMX displays and the speed and agility of expert bladers, in the Skate Park in Monkstown, accompanied by hip hop beats.

Admission to the skate park will be free and you are welcome to join in, but you have to bring your own helmet! Experts will show tips and tricks.

The lineup of expert performers will include Rollerbladers Albert Hooi, Graeme Pollard and Conor Manweiler with Skateboarders Darragh Forrester, Gav Coughlan and Anto Thornberry. Park and Street riders Martin Fagan who’s favourite trick is 720 and Corey Dempsey who’s favourite trick is Barspins and Park rider Stephen Quinn who’s favourite trick is toboggan.

Part of the Bike Week, which will come to an end on Sunday is “Pedal in Phoenix Park”.

The event takes place for the 6th year, but the organisers are not very forthcoming with details. The Facebook Page doesn’t know that event yet despite promises on the Bike Week website, but at least that website tells us that there will be a “tented village with food stalls, bike checks, bike rides, stunt bikes, bike polo, bike treasure hunt, kids Sprocket Rocket cycle training, another ‘Meet the Fawns’ bike tour, great prizes.”

Chesterfield Avenue in the middle of Phoenix Park is blocked for car traffic from the entrance to Aras an Uachterain and that’s where the tents will be lined up along the road. This doesn’t create much of an atmosphere for any type of event and the number of visitors to these Chesterfield events are often very disappointing. Let’s hope that “Pedal in the Park” on Saturday and the “Irish Cargo Bike Championship” on Sunday in the same place will be different.

The Wellington Weekender is a three day festival in the Workman’s Club starting on Friday 19 June at 17:00 and running until Sunday night.

On Saturday the Workman’s Market will start the day at 13:00. There will also be a Hot Wings Challenge and the Vinyl Countdown will happen in No 9 Bar.

At 20:00 “We Cut Corners” will be on stage in the Main Venue, followed by Resident DJs wqho will play Indie Anthems. On the first floor House & Disco will keep you going.

The Brocante Market will take place on Sun. It is a collection of antiques, furniture, vintage jewellery, collectables and curiosities from the past and present, second-hand, refurbished, antique and hand-crafted stuff for your house and garden. If you are an interior designer or just have and eye for style and are looking for a special piece or maybe a bargain then this is the market for you. The market is held every 3rd Sunday of the month.

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place over three Sundays (14+21+28 June) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. “I’ve Just Seen a Face: Preserving Photographs Worldwide From Benin and Beirut to Bogot” is a lecture by Prof Debra Hess Norris (Chair of the Art Conservation Department at the University of Delaware, and Professor of Photograph Conservation).

“Photographic collections are at-risk worldwide. They are threatened by inadequate environmental conditions, poor management, improper housing and handling, natural and man-made emergencies and inherent instability. This presentation will address the physical and chemical structure of photographic materials, present preservation challenges posed by these materials and share recommendations for their long-term care.”

The lecture “The Internet, Warts and All?” by Dr. Paul Bernal (Lecturer in IT, IP and Media Law, University of East Anglia) looks at what we think of and about the Internet.

“The debate over the right to be forgotten has revealed a lot of illusions about how the Internet works in practice. Many of the objections to that right seem to have been based on beliefs that the Internet is some kind of a perfect historical archive.” Dr Paul Bernal will suggest that until we start to be more realistic about the Internet, until we see the Internet ‘warts and all’, our approaches to regulation and management of the Internet are likely to be misguided or counterproductive.

Fête de la Musique is an annual free cultural event set up by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication to celebrate the start of the summer, which is on 21 June!! Throughout France people welcome the summer by playing and listening to music in bars, clubs, concert halls and in the streets.

The Dublin version of this event is organised by the French Embassy in Ireland in association with the Royal Irish Academy of Music and Société Généraleand it is a classical concert with Clément Lefebvre (piano) from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse, Paris, and Miriam Kaczor (flute) from the Royal Irish Acadmy of Music.

The Temple Bar “Night” Market is more an afternoon and evening market (15:00-20:00) and it takes place every Wednesday until 19 August.

“Ireland’s First F*uckUp Night – Failure Sucks, But Instructs” will take place on Thursday and admission is free. Organised by Dublin2020 and the Centre for Creative Practices, thsi events will see a number of speakers from all walks of life open up for the first time about their failures and talk about how these failures have helped them to learn and to recognise success.

Speakers at the first event include: Chris Gordon, CEO of Treehouse, Head of the Irish Social Enterprise Network; Dr. Mary Lou Egan, Economic strategist, Bendick and Egan, Washington DC and Keith Payne, author, poet and critic plus more to be confirmed.

In Dublin three monthly events are planned where Dublin will share stories of failure. The speakers will be varied: artists, architects and people from the words of technology, green, social and business. Each of them tells their story in 10 images, each projected for 40 seconds and at the end of each story the audience asks questions.

Why talk about all these failures?
+ Because failure sucks, but instructs.
+ Because one can learn more from stories of failure than from stories of success.
+ Because the majority of professionals don’t create the “project of the year” in their first attempt.
+ Because people feel the need to break free from the stigmas surrounding “failure”.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Dundrum Festival runs from Tues 23 – Sun 28 June, but the organisers were not at all helpful when it came to identifying if and what the admission charges are for the different events.

Below is a list of events that were free at similar events in other parts of Dublin and maybe they are also free at the Dundrum Festival. The website doesn’t give more detail than a spreadsheet in this downloadable PDF here the Facebook page also only refers to the same spreadsheet.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.
+ Every second Thursday N.C Lawlor, a songwriter, session player and troubadour plays a mix of country, bluegrass & blues from 19:30-21:30.
+ Every Friday (19:30-21:30) Junshi Murakami plays Irish Harp.
+ Every Saturday (19:30-21:30) Nollaig Mann plays a collection of popular and jazz classics.

The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Friday.

The dances are French, Greek, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese folk and traditional dances and everybody interested to join in or to learn is welcome. Admission is free, but donations (suggested: EUR 3) are very welcome

A weekly Gig Night in Sin É, organised and presented by Super Happy Fun Times takes place every Friday and admission is free. The line-up can be found on the Facebook Page below.

Roots Rock/Pop band “The Hard Ground” will play a free gig in the Harbour Bar.

The Mojo Witnesses are playing blues and classic rock at this free gig.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.
