The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

You are invited to view a performance entitled “Navigating the Public Space: Presence” by Leah Smith. It will take place outside the Store Street Garda Station and is the third and final performance of a three part series.

“Leah will be using the curtain, the public space and chalk to create a piece that deals with the power of presence and the passing on of responsibility. The object, that’s contents was formed in Connolly Station and molded in the Eileen McLouglin Park will be transformed into a tool that allows the public to take ownership of it. This performance will be a symbol of passing on the responsibility of creating art from one to another, outside of the gallery.”

The BloomFringe Festival doesn’t have much to do with Bloom in Phoenix Park, apart from the fact that they happen on the same weekend and that there is also a Gardening aspect to Bloom Fringe. And Bloom Fringe is full of really intersting events between Saturday 30 May and Monday 01 June.

There are open days, talks, retail trails, secret dublin tours, workshops, art installations and foodie pop-up moments and social enterprise and inspired collaboration are core elements of Bloom Fringe. And creativity, community, healthy living and sustainable biodiversity are really important as well.

A few events are explicitly mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are soo many Bloom Fringe events (at least 36) – and the majority are free – that it doesn’t make sense to list them all. Instead, you should go to www.bloomfringe.com and www.facebook.com/bloomfringedublin and check them out.

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The little square at the bottom of Sth Great George’s Street, where the “Why Go Bald” sign is, will be turned into a popup garden for the Bloom Fringe Fesatival to show that it is possible to turn grey concrete corners into an oasis of green.

There will be Pop-up Performances, Demonstrations & Art installations and watch out for more along Dame Lane and the path across the road, leading to Dublin castle. THere will be a Temple Lane Takeover! All events are free.

At lunchtime there will be a jazz performance by some “Down With Jazz” performers, Anna Doran will show a StreetArt installation inspired by Frida Kahlo and there will be the Dublin Pop Up Duo from 12:30-13:00. From 12:00-15:00 free fruit will be given away at the square by the Spar shop across the road. And there will be a performance by Ed Hick. (no idea what type of performance).

The Malahide Car Boot Sale is running every Saturday at the Malahide Rugby Club. Admission is free for buyers.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?

HOME\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.

The exhibition will run from 01 May until 19 July and is open from Tuesday-Sunday (Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00). Admission is free.

This is a get together for dogs and their owners on Barnardo Square as part of Bloom Fringe.

The Dublin Youth Dance Company will perform as part of Dublin Dance Festival 2015.

80 young dancers will flow towards Grand Canal Square while dancing contemporary, jazz, hip hop and break dancing. On the Square they will merge “culminating in an impressive finale”.

“This fun, dynamic celebration is a playful response to the urban intensity of the Square and the calmness of the surrounding water. Featuring three youth dance groups from Dublin, led by choreographers Mariam Ribón & Karla Holden from the Dublin Youth Dance Company.”

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

“Forgotten Voices” is a tour that will explore the lives of the tenement dwellers of Dublin city from the time of the famine right up to the middle of the last century. The tour will provide an insight into the lives lived off Dublin’s inner city residents.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

On the June Bank Holiday Monday Dublin is usually packed. Not necessarily with visitors from other countries, but with participants in the Women’s Mini Marathon. Office based employees have a day off, but there is no mercy for people working in shops: Nearly all shops will be open as normal. Pay and Display Parking will not be enforced, but bus lanes and loading bays are going by week day and do not treat bank holidays differently, so Monday rules are Monday rules: Stay out of bus lanes and loading bays!

The BloomFringe Festival doesn’t have much to do with Bloom in Phoenix Park, apart from the fact that they happen on the same weekend and that there is also a bit of a Gardening aspect to Bloom Fringe. But Bloom Fringe is full of really intersting events between Saturday 30 May and Monday 01 June.

There are open days, talks, retail trails, secret dublin tours, workshops, art installations and foodie pop-up moments and social enterprise and inspired collaboration are core elements of Bloom Fringe. And creativity, community, healthy living and sustainable biodiversity are really important as well.

A few events are explicitly mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are soo many Bloom Fringe events (at least 36) – and the majority are free – that it doesn’t make sense to list them all. At the Dublin Port River Fest there will be Open Air Markets, Family Fun Fair Attractions, Street Theatre, Shanty Singers & Entertainment, Children’s Art & Pirate Workshops and Pirate Demonstrations. In addition you can see (and visit) three tall ships and four schooners, there will be free walk through tours of the Jeanie Johnson and the Tug Boats Shackleton & Beaufort will perform their popular Tug Boat Dance (12:00 on all three days).

The yearly Women’s Mini Marathon, a 10km run/jog/walk for women only, will take place again this Bank Holiday Monday.

It is not a free event and registration is closed by now, but you are still invited and welcome to support the runners by cheering them on. There is usually a great atmosphere and any support is appreciated.

Over 40,000 (!!!) participants are expected and many form our Dublin Event Guide Community are taking part. Have a great walk/jog/run and “Well done!” for taking part!!

The event starts at Baggot Street Upper and then goes via Pembroke Road and Merrion Road to Nutley Lane towards the RTE mast. At Stillorgan Road runners will turn left to run a loop and then turn back to run into town via Donnybrook Road, Morehampton Road and Leeson Street with the Finnish in Fitzwilliam Street.

Roads in that area of South Dublin will be closed for many hours, some from 06:00 in the morning and until 19:30. So ideally avoid the area if you only want to pass through.

Advise for runners: If you travel by car to the race, you need to leave it a good bit away from the course, but be careful! Leave NOTHING in the car. A few years ago I saw two or three broken-in cars of participants on car parks in Clontarf with basjed side windows.

“The Mapping Dubliners Project: Locating James Joyce’s Cartographic Narrative Layers” is a talk by Professor Jasmine Mullikene (Oklahoma State University) organised by the School of English.

“James Joyce’s Dubliners contains references to approximately 200 locations in and outside of Dublin. When read carefully, it is also possible to extrapolate distinct routes, intersecting and overlapping paths that link characters and narratives together. To reveal the geospatial patterns and play, it is necessary to visualize the geographic references on a map. To this end, the Mapping Dubliners Project, begun in 2010, is a digital tool that utilizes Google Maps and Google Earth to locate and display each of the places and routes referenced in Dubliners.
This presentation will provide a tour of the Mapping Dubliners Project and explore the interpretive implications of some of the mapped locations as well as the potentials of digital media in literary studies.”

Lennon vs McCartney is a stage play by Stephen Kennedy and this play was now turned into a short film by Eddie Jackson. The film stars Rúaidhrí Conroy (he was in Six Shooter, which won an Oscar and won a prize for his role in The Cripple of Inishmaan) and and Seamus Brennan (in Christ Deliver Us at the Abbey Theatre).

The world premiere of the film Lennon vs McCartney will be on Tuesday at 17:30.

The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in Messrs Maguire. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together. At this month’s Dublin event, the topic is “Pollinators, why we need them”

Dara Stanley from TCD Botany Department will talk about how pollination by bees, hoverflies and other insects is being increasingly recognised as a important wildlife service with real economic value. However these services are being threatened by a range of human activity. Dara is involved in the SYMBIOSYS project which is looking at all these threats in Ireland and how our changing land use is impacting on our pollinators.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

William Butler Yeats received a Chinese carved stone in lapis lazuli as a 70th birthday present from the poet, Harry Clifton. ‘Lapis Lazuli’, one of his best-known later poems, was inspired by the carving and dedicated to Clifton.

In this lecture, Professor Jerusha McCormack uses her experience of teaching in and about China to decode this poem as it moves from Western versions of immortality to the more elusive Chinese vision as inscribed in the carvings of this artefact.

“Mixed Marriages in India” is a public lecture by Dr Renuka Singh (Jawaharlal Nehru University) who is currently a Visiting Professor at Trinity College Dublin.

“Owing to modernization and globalization, there has been an increase in the number of India nationals traveling to far-off lands to study, work and visit. As a consequence there has been an increase in the number of cross-cultural marriages. This lecture is based on research carried out by Dr Singh in India, North America and Europe, and it deals with the challenges and promises of a cross-cultural marriage, where one spouse is Indian and the other a non-Indian.

“The Ongoing Nakba and the Disintegration of Palestinian Education” is a lecture by Prof. Jamil Khader (Dean of Research, Bethlehem University) in Room 4-068 of the DIT.

/Glitch Festival is a digital arts festival in Rua Red and on Wednesday a series of talks take place.

/GLITCH TALKS presents Noel Fitzpatrick, Benjamin Bratton, Paul O’Brien and Jonathan Mayhew for talks and discussion. The festival’s theme of gaps between space and place will open up to ideas, issues and topics including geopolitics of cloud computing, the work of Bernard Stiegler, digital media, gaming and information technology.

“Dante, Florence and the Florin: Bewitched by greed and blinded ‘neath its sway” is the first lecture in a four-lecture series “Dante Quartet” to mark the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri. The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

A public tour of the exhibition “Yeats: The Life and Works of William Butler Yeats” will take place on the first Thursday of each month from March – October 2015. As this year marks the 150th anniversary of the poet’s birth in 1835, the tour will introduce his life and work.

The Wikimedia Community Ireland are running a workshop on Wikipedia editing at the Science Gallery Dublin and you are invited to come to this “Women in STEM edit-a-thon” to learn how to write and improve articles on Wikipedia.

“Lung Cancer, A Survivor’s Story” is a talk with Benny White. Dubliner Benny, was in the entertainment business for forty years. He sang with rock bands in the seventies and went on to join showbands, spending eight years with The Times Showband, gigging all over the world. Benny wishes to share his experience of surviving lung cancer with the hope that he can motivate even one person to give up smoking.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

MythFest (03-07 June) invites you to connect with Ireland’s history and mythology and to immerse yourself in the creatures, characters and colours of ancient Irish legend. MythFest will feature 10 new plays inspired by the stories of ancient Irish mythology and folklore. The plays are repeated every day from Wednesday until Sunday.

The main daily event, the play “The Unquiet Hour: A Tale of Faeries” has an admission charge of EUR 15/10 and you can buy tickets here.

All other events – there are 7 more plays repeated every day – are free.

Biologist and communicator Jeremy Cherfas discusses how globalisation and democratisation of foods have done damage to food systems and the environment.

Jeremy has been championing agricultural biodiversity since the 1990s, operating a seed library on the edges of legality and saving his own seeds.

“Guerre convien surgere: Dante and War” is the second lecture in a four-lecture series “Dante Quartet” to mark the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri. Lecturer is John Barnes (Retired Professor of Italian in University College Dublin.
The principal area of his work has always been medieval Florentine literature, especially historiography and the writings
of Dante.)

This lecture will first consider Dante’s views on war as a principle and then move on to his direct experience of warfare. Its main purpose, however, will be to explore ways in which those views and that experience are reflected in his literary works, particularly in the imagery of the Commedia.

Vokalensemble St. Lorenz is the chamber choir of the largest Protestant church in Bavaria. With 35 singers, the Vokalensemble regularly sings during the services at St. Lorenz and at a number of concerts covering all musical eras from Renaissance to contemporary music.

At the concert in Dublin, the programme consists of many kinds of Protestant church music: Rarely performed Gospel motets by various composers (Raselius, Vulpius, Franck, Briegel), true gemstones of choral music from renaissance and early baroque. Psalms in form of works by Swiss composer Willy Burkhard (20th century) and Felix Mendelssohn. Liturgical music is represented by Kyrie and Gloria from Frank Martin’s Mass for two four-part choirs, and finally the concert will be completed by one of the flagships of a cappella choral music, Johann Sebastian Bach’s motet for double choir “The spirit doth our weakness help”.

Keiron Martin, an original artist inspired by Damien Rice, will perform in Mother Reilly’s. Admission is free.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.
