Hi all!

I have great news today: A new sponsor came on board during the week! Eventbrite, the online ticketing service that allows event organizers to plan, set up ticket sales and promote events, is now supporting the Dublin Event Guide as key sponsor and will make my job a little easier because I have less worries about finding the money to cover the Dublin Event Guide cost. Welcome and Thank You, Eventbrite!! I am looking forward to this co-operation and to grow and enhance the Dublin Event Guide even more!

You will see the Eventbrite Logo popping up in a few different places because they will also add some additional content, but essentially the Dublin Event Guide will stay what it was before: The best and most popular Event Magazine in Dublin that focuses on cultural events for no admission charges. :-)

A little more about Eventbrite next week and for now it is back to this week’s events. It is a somewhat quieter weekend, but that doesn’t mean it is quiet, just about 10% less this week. Mind you, if I had included all Guinness Amplify events an all Working Class Hero Events this weekend and next weekend, it would probably be one of the biggest editions. However, I decided to point you in the direction of the online schedules because otherwise I would just add a “middleman”. I will, though, guide you a little regarding Amplify on the Facebook Page if you are interested. Check it on Wednesday!

Your support and help is needed and MUCH appreciated and here are my weekly appeals:

Sponsorship, like the one from Eventbrite helps hugely, but that doesn’t mean that no additional funds are required. So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 50,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot brings you a story. I wasn’t able to verify if it true that this story is from Paulo Coelho, but no matter who wrote it, it is a good one. I don’t think it needs any further explanation, so here it goes:

There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Brazilian village.
As he sat, he saw a Brazilian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish.
The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fish?”
The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.”
“Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and catch even more?” The businessman was astonished.
“This is enough to feed my whole family,” the fisherman said.
The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day?”
The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink – we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.”
The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman.
“I am a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. By then, you will have moved out of this village and to Sao Paulo, where you can set up HQ to manage your other branches.”
The fisherman continues, “And after that?”
The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, and you will be rich.”
The fisherman asks, “And after that?”
The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning, catch a few fish, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!”
The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing?

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Emma G, Gerry T, Rebecca T, Comet Records, John F and Brian L supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week a few things come to an end and you better check them out before they are gone: The Science Gallery “Strange Weather” exhibition and the Oktoberfest immediately come to mind.

In addition there are some events where the free element is running parallel to the main event, but have a look at the Hard Working Class Heroes Music Festival. The free events are only mini-gigs, but there are lots of them!

If the weather will be nice, remember the Sculpture in Context is still on – but not for much longer!

The brand new Dun Laoghaire Music Festival looks interesting as well.

In general, it is a quiet(er) weekend, but there are still lots of things happening and if music is your thing, check the Facebook Updates on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week. I will put some information for Guinness Amplify there instead of listing all gigs here.

Aidan Killian’s Jesus Versus Buddha – Comedy – Ticket Competition

Wed 01 October – 20:00
Sugar Club, Leeson Street, Dublin 2

‘Jesus Versus Buddha’ is the title of Aidan Killian’s successful comedy show, which he will perform in the Sugar Club.

This is a 50-minute comedy show described as “raw and stimulating” and “has probably more ideas and philosophy crammed into it than 100 other shows put together. It’s brimming, chaotic, digressive and smart.” – Chortle. Aidan has investigated the lives of Jesus and Buddha, compares their essence and brings their words into today’s world. The show is described as “empowering, spiritual and hilarious” and it attracted teenagers to pensioners; Anarchists to church-goers who laughed throughout the sold out gigs at ‘The Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014.’

At the show in the Sugar Club he will also have a secret special guest. It will be an Irish star of Comedy who was involved with Father Ted and The Savage.

Tickets are EUR 12.50 and you can buy them from Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.ie/Aidan-Killian-tickets/artist/2036115

For the gig on 01 October, Aidan has made two pairs of tickets available and the winners were Marta Espallargues and Dee Rooney

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Positive Aging Week

The Positive Aging Week from 01-09 October is a nationwide event that is there to show the older generation that there are lots of great things that they can do in their spare time. Throughout Ireland a vast amount of events are organised and if you are an older person, check the full programme out on www.ageaction.ie/

The programme should be up by Monday at the latest and there is something in it for everyone. Events are typically free.

Positive Aging Week is a 9-day event, but if you are a subscriber to the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, you know that great free events take place throughout the whole year. So if you are an older person and meet others, tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Everyone is welcome to subscribe for free at www.dublineventguide.com

Do you have News about Dublin? Send them over! ;-)

Every week I try to include some news about Dublin here. During the week I take note of anything I come across, but some week’s I am too busy with other things or forget or can’t find anything. If you have any news about things happening in Dublin, send them to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will happily mention you if I use the news you send me. Thanks!

Grand Canal Theatre sold

Did you see the news that the Grand Canal Theatre has been sold? It was originally owned by developer Harry Crosbie and then went together with the Point and lots more of Crosbie’s properties into the “bad bank” NAMA. Since July it was on the market for approx. 20mio (Build price was between 80-100mio!). Now it was sold to John & Bernadette Gallagher who found 28mio of change for it. It doesn’t really affect customers, but it is good that it is not owned by the same group that owns the Point Theatre. The Point Theatre is owned by Live Nation and they wanted to buy the Grand Canal Theatre as well, but didn’t succeed.

Open House Dublin

From 17-19 October, Open House Dublin takes place again. It is a brilliant event organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation. This year’s programme map is now available, and main collection points are Connolly Station and City Hall, but they can also be found in a number of public venues and libraries around the city. And it is also available online: www.architecturefoundation.ie/openhouse (and in Totally Dublin Magazines)

I will mention more about Open House, for now just keep an eye out for the programme.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Oktoberfest 2014

12:00, Sat 04 Oct

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1

Last weekend of the Oktoberfest already! Hurry if you haven’t been yet!

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 18 Sept – 05 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues because of the severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd wristband system kicks in whereby you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but I never had to get a wristband in a pub to ensure that I have something to eat when I am there.

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

Strange Weather – Science Gallery

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.

You can even be a TV weather man/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!
Here is me giving it a go: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYQjHHfRdco …I know, I better not give up the day job. ;-)

New Theatre, 43 East Essex St, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Grupo Raíces (Grupa Fréamhacha) is inviting to a film screening about Colombia, multinational interests and corporate mercenaries. Admission is free.

“Impunity is a documentary examining Colombia’s paramilitary demobilization process and its impact on hundreds of thousands of victims of violence. In 2005, the Colombian Congress passed law 975, the Justice and Peace law, which created terms for the demobilization of the country’s paramilitaries, and the construction of a reconciliation process. The process has been criticized by human rights organizations inside and outside of Colombia, who contend that the terms of the law are too favorable to perpetrators, offer too little to victims, and have allowed paramilitary structures to continue intact. This film examines the law, six years after its implementation, and its impacts on Colombian civil society.”

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

This is odd

Water Charges Protesters

What is with some Irish people when they protest, do they completely forgetor ignore who and what they are protest against? I was shocked by seeing this video on Facebook: www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1533005913596766 And Anti-Water Charges protest, but why do the protesters attack workers who are NOT decision makers, who don’t do anything illegal and who just install a meter. A water meter doesn’t make the rules and it doesn’t cost you money. It is the people behind the desks that mess it up, not the people with the shovel.

I would hope that the protesters realise that their protests are totally misguided and that the real target is at a completely different place. Disgusting behaviour of the protesters.
